Paul Feig is opening up his checkbook for the LGBTQ community.
Directed by the filmmaker behind “A Simple Favor” and “Bridesmaids,” along with his spouse Laurie, have generously contributed $300,000 to three non-profit organizations that champion and assist queer youth: The Trevor Project, Trans Lifeline, and It Gets Better.
Over the past few weeks, significant safeguards for the wellbeing and security of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the transgender community, have been dismantled. I can’t stay indifferent as my friends, associates, and the entire LGBTQ+ community – fellow citizens – are deprived of their rights. It’s crucial that we all utilize our abilities and resources to uphold the support and protections each member of the LGBTQ+ community deserves. I hope these contributions will aid organizations like The Trevor Project, Translifeline.org, and It Gets Better in continuing their vital daily work.
Funds are being raised in response to the news that the Trump administration is mandating the dismissal of transgender soldiers from the U.S. military. One of Trump’s initial executive orders specified that the government acknowledges only two genders, male and female, and has eliminated mentions of trans individuals and gender transition care from online resources and records. Various anti-trans policies and guidelines are being contested in court by LGBTQ rights groups and advocates.
The Trevor Project functions as a suicide prevention hotline specifically designed for LGBTQ young people, whereas Trans Lifeline provides emotional and financial assistance to trans individuals in distress. The It Gets Better project aims to inspire, empower, and connect LGBTQ youth worldwide by sharing and amplifying stories from successful queer adults.
In an interview with EbMaster, Myles Markham, director of development at Translifeline.org, expressed, “This year, with anti-trans sentiments and federal marginalization at a peak, the support and generosity from influential storytellers like Paul is incredibly relevant and beneficial. Donations such as this will enable us to provide essential services to more individuals in distress, while also offering hope and possibility to the tens of thousands of trans youth and adults who are struggling due to the disheartening rhetoric and policies of our current administration.
Kevin Wong, holding a senior position at The Trevor Project in marketing, communications, and content, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the substantial donation given by Paul Feig to aid our critical mission at The Trevor Project. Studies conducted by us suggest that approximately every 45 seconds, a young person identifying as LGBTQ+ in the United States considers taking their own life. This generous contribution will fortify the capabilities of our crisis counselors to assist more youth who are expressing concerns about how the ongoing political news negatively affects their lives. Our mission revolves around people, rather than politics.
Brian Wenke, executive director at It Gets Better, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the “generous contribution” made by the Feigs.
During a period when LGBTQ+ youngsters encounter numerous obstacles, this backing reinforces our pledge to amplify their voices and provide the tools for them to flourish,” Wenke stated. “Paul’s narratives have traditionally echoed within our circle, serving as a testament that representation transcends visibility — it embodies power. With this assistance, we continue to strive towards creating a realm where LGBTQ+ youth feel recognized, encouraged, and can embrace their boundless capabilities.
Feig’s most recent movie, “Another Simple Favor,” will debut at SXSW on its opening night next week, specifically March 7 in Austin. Following this, it will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting May 1. On the other hand, “The Housemaid” starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, an adaptation of a highly acclaimed book, is set to premiere at Christmas.
