Meta, the company behind Instagram, has acknowledged a significant problem that led to an influx of explicit and disturbing content in Instagram Reels.
Among the top alternatives for creating short video clips, Instagram’s feature called Reels has gained significant popularity.
Instagram has been trying to attract TikTok content creators by offering large incentives, while also experimenting with enhancing the way users navigate Instagram Reels for a more enjoyable experience.
Starting from February 26, 2025, a large number of disturbing and explicit videos started circulating on the platform, causing concern among users. Eventually, Meta acknowledged and addressed this problem.
Meta apologizes for Instagram Reels content error
In a statement given to CNBC, Meta expressed regret over the Instagram Reels problem, which led to an influx of disturbing and explicit material being reported by users.
We recently discovered and resolved an issue that led some users to view content in their Instagram Reels feed that was not appropriate. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Users on social media have shared their concerns that despite having Instagram’s “Strict Sensitive Content Filter” set at its maximum level, they continue to encounter upsetting material.
Prior to the apology, Reddit was inundated with numerous discussion threads as users shared their complaints about the frequent posts of street fights, murders, car accidents involving gore, and explicit sexual content.
Meta didn’t specifically explain the mistake that led to the content appearing in users’ feeds to CNBC, but based on their guidelines, some of that content should not have been on the platform at all.
In an effort to shield our users from potentially distressing material, we filter out the most intense content and tag other graphic content with warnings to signal its sensitivity before being accessed. We might also limit access to this content for users under 18 by requiring age verification or “gatekeeping” such content.
