CBS News Mulls Veteran Tom Cibrowski for Senior Role (EXCLUSIVE)

The next potential leader of CBS News has built up a lot of experience running newsrooms for ABC.

It’s been suggested that Tom Cibrowski, a former high-ranking executive at ABC News who played a significant part in helping “Good Morning America” surpass “Today” in ratings over the past decade, could potentially take on a top position at CBS News. This speculation comes as Paramount Global, the division responsible for CBS News, is facing one of its toughest times. If appointed, Cibrowski would work under Wendy McMahon, who manages news, local stations, and syndicated programming for CBS.

CBS News chose not to provide comments from their executives. I was unable to get an immediate response from Cibrowski. It appears that neither CBS News nor the executive have finalized an agreement, leaving open the chance that a potential deal may not materialize.

The executive is expected to take on the position that was previously held by Adrienne Roark, an experienced news executive in the local scene who managed CBS national newsgathering and the operations of stations like WCBS and WLNY in New York, as well as WBZ and WSBK in Boston. Roark is leaving CBS to work for Tegna as their chief content officer, reporting directly to CEO Mike Steib.

Cibrowski has run KGO, a San Francisco station owned by ABC, since 2018.

CBS News is currently facing several challenging situations. The news division finds itself at the epicenter of a lawsuit brought forth by President Donald Trump against Paramount Global, alleging manipulation of a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, which he claims affected the 2024 election outcome. Executives at Paramount Global are considering settling the lawsuit due to concerns that the White House may delay its proposed acquisition by David Ellison’s Skydance Media. Additionally, the FCC has requested transcripts and footage related to the Harris interview. In the meantime, Paramount, which has already undergone significant cost reductions, is anticipated to institute further cuts following the completion of the Skydance deal.

When McMahon disclosed Roark’s departure, she refrained from naming a replacement, instead mentioning that the company would ponder over this development for a while.

It’s likely that Cibrowski will play a role in the administration of CBS News staples like “60 Minutes,” “Sunday Morning,” and “CBS Evening News.” In late May, CBS revealed a fresh format for the esteemed “CBS Evening News” that centers around co-anchors Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson and emphasizes in-depth reporting and features over brief news summaries in short segments. Instead of having one anchor, as was the traditional format for many decades, they now share the role. Ratings have dropped since DuBois and Dickerson took over from Norah O’Donnell, but there was a glimmer of optimism last week: an increase in overall viewership.
