Warning! Below are spoilers from the Paradise series.
In the final stages of Paradise season 1, the creators are gradually disclosing key details, including the reasons behind the apocalypse that rendered life on the surface uninhabitable, forcing people to seek refuge underground. The latest episode (number 7) has been particularly moving, underscoring the immense and devastating scale of the catastrophe that humankind has experienced.
How did the world end in Paradise? What’s the deal with the Antarctic supervolcano?
A massive volcanic explosion occurred deep beneath the Antarctic ice cap, causing the ice to shatter and melt, releasing colossal amounts of water equivalent to trillions of gallons. This sudden deluge set off an extraordinary tsunami that surged at a speedy 600 miles per hour across the globe.
Initially, Australia suffered catastrophic damage as the disaster unfolded, but it didn’t stop there. The tsunami swept across the globe, leaving devastation in its wake wherever it went. This resulted in a large portion of the earth being submerged underwater, with only the top of the Washington Monument (standing at 555 feet) visible above water in Washington D.C., indicating the extent of the flooding.
Even though much of the land is submerged, there are areas that have remained dry and inhabited, meaning that the inhabitants of Underground Paradise are not the sole survivors. Life continues to exist on the surface, albeit with a reduced population due to the underwater catastrophe.
President Bradford saved some of humanity on the surface, including Xavier’s wife
A modest number of humanity found salvation in Paradise. The impending disaster, known as the cataclysm, sparked global nuclear conflict, a desperate effort to manage dwindling resources. Faced with nuclear warfare, the United States President was authorized to deploy U.S. nuclear missiles via a red alert system.
In the end, President Bradford opted for an alternative strategy. Rather than contribute to the devastation and cause the loss of countless lives, despite his advisors, such as Sinatra, urging him otherwise, assuring him it would be more compassionate to let people perish instantly rather than face a post-disaster reality, he chose another path. Instead of triggering the red code, President Bradford initiated the covert blue code, devised by the Colonel following the Cuban Missile Crisis. The blue code represents a unique protocol that sets off a synchronized series of global electromagnetic bursts to disable every electronic circuit globally. This allowed Bradford to deactivate all launched nuclear weapons, rendering every electronic device ineffective as well.
Due to these events, some members of humanity endured both a nuclear war and a devastating tsunami on Earth. Among the survivors was Teri, who happened to be Xavier’s wife and was residing in Atlanta at the time. She came perilously close to losing her life due to an incoming missile that was heading towards her location; fortunately, President Bradford successfully disarmed it before it could cause harm.
Due to Bradford’s choice, certain members of mankind were granted an opportunity for survival. However, this new life on the surface presents them with an entirely different world, devoid of the comfort and protection enjoyed by residents of Paradise.
