Recently, Microsoft has been making some changes by releasing more of its exclusive games on competing platforms such as the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. This multi-platform approach benefits gamers and expands the market for Microsoft’s own studios, as suggested by Head of Xbox Game Studios, Craig Duncan.
Duncan stated during the official Xbox podcast that he believes our studios’ games are fantastic, and it’s important for them to have an opportunity to be enjoyed by as many people as possible.
As a gaming enthusiast, I align with the sentiments expressed by Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO, when he talked about Microsoft’s shift towards releasing its own games on competing platforms. In essence, he believes that it’s not advantageous to lock games behind barriers. Limiting where games can be enjoyed doesn’t foster growth for the games themselves.
Previously serving as the studio head at Rare, Duncan expressed that releasing Sea of Thieves on PS5 was a beneficial decision for both Rare and the game. By doing so, it eliminated obstacles and enabled a larger community to enjoy cross-play together. Similarly, Forza Horizon 5 is set to release on PS5 this spring, accompanied by Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Duncan simply believes that expanding our games’ reach benefits gamers overall.
Duncan emphasized that each game developer yearns for their creation to reach the broadest audience possible, and by extending Xbox games to competing platforms, they’re helping make this dream a reality. He expressed his delight in being able to provide such an opportunity.
Expanding Xbox games onto additional platforms can boost Xbox’s earnings, which is indeed a significant aspect. Previously, Phil Spencer has explicitly mentioned this, explaining that when one of their games is sold on the PS5, Microsoft receives only 70% of the revenue, with Sony taking the remaining 30%. However, he emphasized that this is still money that they wouldn’t have if the game wasn’t available on the PS5. This earned income is then channeled back into creating more Xbox games, according to Spencer.
Microsoft’s approach to releasing games across different platforms is tailored to each title. For instance, Starfield was initially launched exclusively on consoles and hasn’t been made available for PS5 up until now. However, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which debuted in December 2024 on Xbox, will be playable on PS5 this coming spring. In contrast, Doom: The Dark Ages is set to launch simultaneously on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles this May.
