Lucius Malfoy Actor Jason Isaacs Says ‘Harry Potter’ Movies ‘Weren’t Much Fun to Make. It’s Quite Boring Making Big Special Effects Films’

Jason Isaacs is currently receiving praise for his captivating portrayal in HBO’s “The White Lotus” Season 3, yet to numerous fans worldwide, he remains synonymous with Lucius Malfoy. This is because Isaacs played the famed antagonist from the “Harry Potter” series in six films, starting with “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” in 2002, and concluding with “Deathly Hallows – Part 2” in 2011. The actor recently reflected on his time in the “Harry Potter” franchise during an interview on BBC’s “The One Show.

Though I’ve been part of the films, whenever I take my godchildren or nephews/nieces on a studio tour, and we enter the Great Hall, I can’t help but get emotional. It’s incredibly powerful and overwhelming. There seems to be some enchanting magic that was present in those stories,” Isaacs expressed.

Although the completed project moved him to tears, Isaacs admitted: “Admittedly, they weren’t particularly enjoyable to create. Crafting big-scale special effects films can be quite monotonous. Yet, the rewards come later. The joy lies in witnessing and interacting with people whose lives have been impacted by it, and seeing new generations discover it. Some even claim their lives were saved by it, and I genuinely believe this.”

Isaacs found the final product very emotional, but he confessed that making big special effects films wasn’t much fun. However, he found joy in meeting people who were affected by it and seeing families enjoy it. Some people even said their lives were saved by it, and Isaacs truly believes this.

An unexpected event took place; I’m not sure what caused it, but when these particular ingredients were mixed, the soufflé miraculously rose. This simple act sparked feelings of love globally and promoted a sense of unity,” he summarized.

Actors like Isaac aren’t alone in finding that working on a VFX-heavy blockbuster isn’t particularly thrilling. In 2021, actor Anthony Hopkins caused quite a stir when he expressed that acting in front of a green screen can feel meaningless. Notably, Hopkins portrayed Odin in several Marvel Cinematic Universe “Thor” movies.

A fresh actor is about to assume the part of Lucius Malfoy in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the “Harry Potter” books. Interestingly, this actor had initially auditioned for the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart in “Chamber of Secrets,” but instead developed Lucius’ quiet and ominous voice back in 2017.

Isaacs recounted his experience with a drama school teacher who frequently spoke in a high pitch and said, ‘You’ll achieve nothing, Isaacs. You won’t work at all,’ along with a British art critic named Brian Sewell. Additionally, the director Chris Columbus would approach him and request, ‘We’ve got that take, it’s excellent, but could we have another one where you soften your voice by about 80 to 90 percent?'”
