In my opinion, Rachel Maddow, a respected figure at MSNBC, has spoken out against the network’s recent decisions regarding its hosts of color. She made this statement during her very own TV show on MSNBC. Here’s an excerpt from what she said, as reported by The Daily Beast: “I must admit, it’s disconcerting to observe that on a network where we have two non-white hosts in prime time, both of our non-white hosts are being let go, along with Katie Phang during weekends. This isn’t just unfortunate; it feels indefensible, and I cannot condone it.
Rachel Maddow particularly objected to the discontinuation of Joy Reid’s program, “The ReidOut.” Starting in July 2020, Reid became the first Black woman to host a prime-time news show on MSNBC or any other network. In her words, “I am 51 years old and have been employed since I was 12; I’ve had numerous jobs you wouldn’t believe if I told you. However, in all the jobs I’ve ever had and throughout my entire life, there is no colleague for whom I have more affection and respect than Joy Reid.
The newly appointed president of the network announced the termination in a memo dated February 24th. During a video call with the “Win With Black Women” podcast, which was broadcast live, Reid expressed a range of emotions over the past few days. He felt anger, rage, disappointment, pain, and even guilt for causing his team to lose their jobs. However, he ultimately found himself feeling nothing but gratitude.
Rachel Maddow expressed her reluctance about losing her colleague, stating, “I don’t want to see her depart from MSNBC, and I believe it’s a misstep to let her go.” In the meantime, Symone Sanders-Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez from The Weekend will temporarily host The ReidOut, according to the Washington Post. Additionally, Jen Psaki is set to join MSNBC as part of the changes implemented by new MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler. So far, Kutler has not responded to Maddow’s criticism.
