In its second weekend, the film “Captain America: Brave New World” saw a significant decline in box office earnings, dropping by 68%. This is the third largest drop for a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the disappointing performances of “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”. The creator of “Deadpool”, Rob Liefeld, expressed his displeasure about Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, with a straightforward comment on X: “It’s time for Feige to step aside. He’s exhausted.
Earlier this month, Rob Liefeld revealed that he’s parting ways with Marvel, following an incident where he and his family weren’t invited to the afterparty at last July’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” premiere hosted by Disney. During a podcast discussion at the time, Liefeld expressed that this decision was intended to humiliate, undermine, and defeat him. Since then, Liefeld has also highlighted other grievances he harbors against Marvel, specifically mentioning a perceived lack of respect from Kevin Feige. Disney and Marvel Studios have chosen not to respond to these claims.
In the “Captain America: Brave New World” movie, it made a solid start with approximately $100 million during the four-day President’s Day weekend this month. However, unfavorable critiques and poor audience recommendations led to a significant drop in its second weekend. The 68% decrease is similar to “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” but these 2022 movies had more impressive opening weekends. The production cost of the latest Captain America film was over $180 million, not including marketing expenses. So far, it has grossed a total of $289.4 million globally.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior analyst at Comscore, stated to EbMaster that the significant decline in viewership for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is now typical for Marvel movies. Despite their ongoing popularity, the 68% drop in attendance during the second weekend indicates that viewers may not be as excited as usual for this film compared to previous Marvel releases.
Contrary to some recent Marvel films, not all have experienced the same downturn. In 2023, James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” was warmly embraced by fans and grossed a solid $118 million on its opening weekend. However, it saw a decline of approximately 47% in its second week. Similarly, last year’s blockbuster hit “Deadpool & Wolverine” enjoyed a successful box office run, starting with an impressive $211 million debut and dropping by around 53% to $97 million in its second weekend.
