‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ Surpasses $70 Million Overseas, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Nears $300 Million at Global Box Office

The fourth movie in Bridget Jones’ romantic film series, titled “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy”, is almost reaching a delightful milestone at the international box office, as it’s predicted to earn over $75 million abroad.

In the international box office, “Bridget Jones 4” with Renée Zellweger in the lead role has earned approximately $19.2 million over the weekend from a total of 73 markets. This brings its global earnings to more than $71 million, surpassing the ticket sales for the previous three Bridget Jones movies and the current year’s “Ticket to Paradise” starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, at the same stage of their respective releases, according to Universal Pictures. The movie, which cost $50 million to produce, was initially released on Peacock in the U.S.

In 2001, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” made a staggering $262 million internationally. Its follow-ups, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” in 2004 and “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016, brought in $224 million and $187 million from foreign markets respectively. On the other hand, “Ticket to Paradise” managed to earn $100 million overseas. Notably, these romantic comedies earned at least 60% and as much as 89% of their total earnings from international ticket sales.

In other global box offices, “Captain America: Brave New World” reclaimed the top spot with a earnings of $35.3 million across 52 territories. The follow-up to the superhero series, featuring Anthony Mackie as Captain America, has now earned a total of $148.2 million internationally and $289.4 million so far.

This “Captain America” movie is currently the most profitable film released by Hollywood this year, with no other movies challenging its success so far. However, industry analysts are watching to see if it can sustain its momentum like “Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania” did in 2023, which had a similar beginning but experienced a second weekend dip similar to “Brave New World.” The third “Ant-Man” film ultimately earned $476 million but didn’t manage to cover its costs during its cinema run. Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has seen declining commercial success since the massive box office success of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” has two more movies – “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” – scheduled for release in 2025.
