Throughout his career, Anthony Michael Hall has sought out roles that enable him to connect with a variety of characters. He’s constantly on the hunt for authenticity, passion – that spark that incites him to delve deeply into a script, challenge norms, and demonstrate he’s far from just the geek from ‘80s teen movie groups like “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles.
In his latest part, Hall takes on the character of an arms dealer in the third series of “Reacher,” a popular Amazon Prime Video show. This series follows Jack Reacher, a former military policeman turned wanderer across America, dismantling progressively larger criminal networks. For any actor, “Reacher” offers a significant stage, yet Hall was meticulous about crafting the intricate character he portrays, Zachary Beck, who deceitfully imports rugs as a cover for his illicit activities.
He comments that the character is deeply complex. Under a disguise, he’s part of a criminal underworld, but there’s an ongoing power struggle, and he’s trying to survive amidst his criminal activities while harboring a dark past. Interestingly, his other storyline revolves around his relationship with his son, Richard.
The facet of his multifaceted profession brought excitement to Hall, since he had become a father for the first time, welcoming Michael Anthony Hall II into the world in June 2023. Although his on-screen son is in his twenties, Hall now has the opportunity to express his genuine feelings as a real father.
Hall explains that he found a wealth of resources to help him fully grasp the complexities of Richard and Zach’s relationship. By playing a character with a dark side, he sought to reveal their brighter aspects. In his opinion, the light in this character lies within his relationship with Richard. Despite being deeply damaged, there is a desire for redemption towards his son, which also reflects a sense of self-forgiveness and atonement.
Hall’s ambition to portray complex characters began at a young age when he aspired to turn his early fame into a long-term acting career. He was only a teenager after appearing in a series of successful ’80s John Hughes films such as “Club,” “Candles,” “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” and “Weird Science.” Despite this, he was strongly associated with the films and his co-stars from that period, including Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, and Molly Ringwald.
He didn’t anticipate being stereotyped in his roles; he doesn’t believe it was deliberate on John’s part, referring to the “nerdy” character he portrayed in the movies. However, that character seemed to develop organically, and he thinks it’s because at that time, there was a certain level of self-consciousness, awkwardness, and growth that comes with adolescence. He was 17 years old, had already worked on several films, and was essentially winging it. His work with John Hughes provided invaluable lessons, and he credits him for his career. There was an atmosphere of joy and liberty on set that he cherished as a young actor.
Yearning to expand my horizons and shed my geeky image, I leaped from opportunity to opportunity, gracing stages such as “Saturday Night Live” for a single season in 1985, donning the jersey in “Johnny Be Good,” and embodying villainous roles like the one in “Edward Scissorhands.
Throughout the subsequent years, Hall seized each opportunity as a means to hone his skills and gain knowledge about the field.
In various stages of my career, and specifically during my twenties when I was simply trying to survive in the business, I had the privilege of collaborating with some incredible stars. This includes appearances on shows such as ‘Diagnosis: Murder’ or ‘Touched by an Angel.’ Working on these projects, especially after a prolonged absence from work, felt like I was starring in a major film and provided invaluable insights.
By the turn of the millennium, Hall’s physical attributes had matured, no longer resembling his iconic teenage appearance. This allowed him to secure a steady career and a variety of character roles. He starred in a long-running adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dead Zone” on USA Network, and made appearances in popular shows like “Entourage,” “Community,” “Riverdale,” and “Bosch: Legacy.” Additionally, he landed significant film roles in notable productions such as “The Dark Knight,” “Foxcatcher,” “Halloween Kills,” and “War Machine.
Hall found solace in immersing himself into characters – frequently portraying intricate males faced with extraordinary predicaments – as a means to avoid being confined by the blockbuster movies of his younger years. This liberation has granted him a unique viewpoint on a journey that took an unconventional course, allowing him to embrace fresh opportunities while simultaneously cherishing his legendary early accomplishments.

Hall’s knack for slipping into roles – particularly those of complex men dealing with extraordinary situations – served as a method for him to distance himself from the widely acclaimed films of his youth. The freedom derived from this has given him a fresh angle on a career that deviated from the norm, enabling him to welcome new adventures while still acknowledging his iconic early performances.
Hall remarks with a touch of delight, “I’m in my 49th year of working in this field.” He reflects on the period when one might experience a second adolescence in their twenties, feeling the pressure to have everything figured out by the time they reach their thirties. However, he shares that over the years, he has become less rigid and is now filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for having persevered. He believes that the key to longevity in one’s career lies in the people you work with, striving to collaborate with talented filmmakers and actors, and continuing to focus on his craft.

You can watch the first three installments of ‘Reacher’ Season 3 right now on Prime Video. New episodes will be released every week afterward.
