The Sinister Truth Behind Miss Huang’s Wintertide Fellowship at Lumon

In the sixth episode of Severance Season 2, Milchick alludes to a place called “Wintertide” during his conversation with Miss Huang, providing insight into why she became part of Lumon.

Since Severance’s comeback, there has been ongoing speculation about Miss Huang, the stern deputy manager on the partitioned level, whose youthful nature is often highlighted.

As a devoted admirer, I must say that it’s become increasingly clear in the series that she’s proficient with the theremin. And in Episode 5, there were hints suggesting she isn’t detached from her body; intriguingly, she advised Milchick against allowing the MDR team to conduct a funeral for Irving because it might make them feel more human-like.

Up until the sixth episode of Season 2, she mainly kept to herself and occasionally played games at her desk. But then, a chilly exchange with Milchick unveiled some significant details regarding her past.

Wintertide is a university in the world of Severance

It seems that Wintertide might be a university located in Kier, and Miss Huang could be interning at Lumon as part of her scholarship program.

In Episode 6, Milchick summons Miss Huang to his office following his performance assessment. Notably, Mr. Drummond had lodged two criticisms against him: misuse of paper clips and an overabundance of elaborate vocabulary. It’s likely that only Miss Huang would voice such complaints (perhaps due to a sense of resentment).

He shares with her that she won’t be able to complete the fellowship unless he considers her suitable for Wintertide.

This implies making the most of your time, concentrating on your responsibilities, and eliminating juvenile immaturity from your character.

Straightforwardly interpreted, it seems Miss Huang might be employed at Lumon as part of an accelerated pathway towards attending university, with the term “fellowship” being particularly significant. Columbia University defines fellowships as temporary, funded positions that can range from a few weeks to several years.

Fellowships may serve various purposes such as professional growth, academic advancement, or personal enrichment. These opportunities are often funded by particular organizations, institutions, or governments, and they establish their own criteria for qualification.

Wintertide could have a darker meaning

As a dedicated admirer, I can’t help but ponder the possible reasons behind Wintertide’s name. After all, it appears that Kier is a land always shrouded in chill and covered with snow. But there seems to be a more ominous connotation as well.

It has been noted by spectators that there’s a 2023 film titled Wintertide, whose plot goes as follows: “In a remote northern metropolis beset by an epidemic of depression that turns its sufferers into mindless automatons, a woman uncovers the secret to resilience hidden within her dreams.

Although we haven’t visited Salt’s Neck yet, which some speculate to be Ms. Cobel’s enigmatic hometown, it could be where the story of Wintertide unfolds. Alternatively, it might just be an amusing Easter egg; regardless, it leaves viewers wondering.

It seems the creators are intentionally leaving clues for us, as one person on Reddit suggested. They’ve made it clear they don’t want to play games with their audience, but instead provide answers. At the same time, they understand that we enjoy dissecting, speculating, and solving mysteries.

A reader recently referenced “Winter Tide,” a 2017 book that takes place in the Cthulhu Mythos world devised by H.P. Lovecraft. It’s possible this is a hidden clue, a mere coincidence, or simply nothing special – but then again, it could potentially hint at something deeper.
