Chess Scandal: Carlsen’s ‘Forbidden Jeans’ Fetch Insane eBay Bids for Charity!

5-times World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has decided to sell his jeans, which bear the emblem of chess organization FIDE, on eBay. The significant funds raised from this sale will be generously donated to charity.

The five-time World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen, is auctioning off a pair of jeans embellished with the FIDE logo on eBay, with all the earnings going towards charitable causes.

In December 2024, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen opted to withdraw from the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships due to a dress code issue: He was informed that blue jeans were not permitted for competition.

Furthermore, Carlsen was penalized with a fine of $200. Despite informing the authorities that he intended to switch to a more formal outfit, the Grandmaster ended up withdrawing from the tournament altogether.

The instance was marked in the annals of chess as “jeans gate” gained popularity online. With numerous supporters rallying behind Carlsen, the chess prodigy decided to auction off his iconic jeans on eBay for a charitable purpose.

Carlsen is putting up for auction his once-forbidden jeans. It’s an unexpected turn of events, but here it goes! Proceeds from this sale will support the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. And yes, these are game-worn.

Up for grabs: My previously restricted pair of jeans! (A surprise offering I never anticipated.)

35 fans have placed a bid on Magnus Carlsen’s FIDE jeans

Right now, I’m thrilled to share that as I type this, a legendary pair of my favorite jeans on eBay has attracted 35 bids! However, only one fortunate fan will walk away with these iconic denims. Initially priced around $20, the bidding war has sent the price soaring, reaching an astounding $8K!

Carlsen wears a size 32 jean from the high-end Italian brand Corneliani, which has a leg length of 28 inches and a waist measurement of 18 inches. The price for these jeans ranges between $270 and $700 per pair.

The reduced cost of the jeans will be contributed to Big Brothers Big Sisters, aiding in the provision of mentorship programs at chess workshops, community gatherings, and other initiatives. This support aims to foster connections, sense of belonging, and positively impact the lives of young individuals by engaging them through the game of chess.

Following his tweet regarding the sale of his memorabilia, Carlsen encountered encouragement from his supporters. A few even proposed the idea of him starting his own jeans brand, while many concurred that it was an “appropriate” or “smart” move with the historical trousers.

Many admirers inquired if the denim pants were being offered without washing, to which Carlsen affirmatively replied, “Indeed, the genuine article.

Currently, as of February 20th, Carlsen’s “prohibited jeans” remain available for purchase on eBay. However, given the intense competition, it seems unlikely that the bidding contest will continue for much longer.
