Angela Bassett Wasn’t ‘Allowed to Be Disappointed’ by Oscar Loss

Angela Bassett isn’t upset, but rather shows a feeling of disappointment following her 2023 Oscar loss, as she explains in an interview with Town & Country. In the February issue, she expresses surprise at not being allowed to feel disappointed about an outcome where she felt she deserved to win. That year, Bassett was nominated for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but lost to Jamie Lee Curtis for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In the clip of Curtis’s win, you can notice a momentary freeze on Bassett’s face, and she does not stand up to cheer for Curtis like her fellow nominees did.

She admits to often showing appreciation for others, but during that specific instance, she clarifies that she didn’t consider it a special gift. Instead, she felt it was something one should expect, given the effort and time invested.”

The following year, Bassett was honored with an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards.

It’s worth noting that in addition to interviewing Angela Bassett, Town & Country also spoke with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, a close friend of Bassett’s. This conversation might have taken place before Jean-Baptiste was overlooked for an acting nomination by the Academy this year for her role in ‘Hard Truths’. In the interview, Jean-Baptiste expressed her thoughts on Bassett: “That can be challenging because she is highly esteemed among her peers, and perhaps the system hasn’t fully recognized her worth.” She went on to say, “I think it boils down to opportunities. It seems that the chances to portray various roles haven’t been readily available for her.” Could it be time for these two talented actresses to address their feelings through a shared screen presence? Perhaps a movie about friendship and reconciliation could be in order?
