Foundation Media Partners Launches Foundation Books, Sets Partnership with Macmillan Publishers (EXCLUSIVE)

Media company specializing in franchises, Foundation Media Partners, has established Foundation Books and entered into a pioneering strategic alliance with publishing giant, Macmillan Publishing. To boost its presence in the literary world, Foundation has signed a multiple-year publishing agreement with Macmillan.

Under the guidance of Jen Besser, President and Publisher of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, and Patrick Hughes, Founder and CEO of Foundation Media Partners, this joint endeavor aims to concentrate on books that have a robust foundation in cinema. The collaborating companies will subsequently team up on television and film projects connected to the newly acquired titles.

As reported by Foundation Books and Macmillan, they are unveiling a model that empowers creators/writers during the movie and TV development stages. This could involve authors penning initial screenplay drafts, maintaining active roles as significant producers, or a mix of both. Furthermore, this model allows Macmillan to delve deeper into the content creation process, leading to increased opportunities and financial benefits for writers. Foundation Books will encompass a variety of titles, from franchise-based works to personal narratives that showcase influential and prominent voices.

Foundation Media specializes in working with authors whose books have collectively sold more than 60 million copies, and they have a history of transforming literary properties into films. One of their notable achievements is the creation of the animated hit “Bad Guys,” based on Aaron Blabey’s popular children’s book series, which topped the box office for Dreamworks Animation and Universal Pictures. They also produced “Thelma the Unicorn,” another book franchise by Blabey, as a feature film for Netflix, which ranked second on Netflix’s chart. Most recently, they collaborated with Rose Byrne’s production company, Dollhouse Pictures, to adapt Anh Do’s bestselling novel “Wolf Girl.

Hughes spearheaded the initiation of Foundation Books and negotiated the partnership with Macmillan. “We enjoy a strong collaboration with Macmillan, and our perspectives on the book industry’s future and its connection with Hollywood are remarkably similar,” Hughes stated. “We are thrilled about the lineup we’ve developed and the structure we’ve established at Foundation, which supports creators and authors from the outset and throughout the entire creative journey. We look forward to cultivating franchises and sharing stories that resonate, thereby demonstrating once more that books serve as the cornerstone of the entertainment sector.

As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about joining forces with Foundation Media. This innovative company mirrors my own conviction that the way we bring stories to life on the silver screen should be as daring and imaginative as the talented directors and actors whose visions we share.

Following the announcement of Foundation’s first-look agreement with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, they are now moving forward with a new book unit. This deal allows them to create film and TV projects based on books from Simon & Schuster’s extensive publishing library, which dates back over 100 years. Specifically, Foundation is working on a variety of titles from the Little Simon Chapter Books & Graphic Novels collection, intending to produce both animated and live-action properties for movies and television.
