Swap places, Meredith Grey, and welcome Kristine Barnett. Ellen Pompeo, renowned for her leading character in “Grey’s Anatomy” since 2005, now takes the helm in Hulu’s fresh limited series titled “Good American Family.
The trailer starts off indicating that the series, created by 20th Television, derives from numerous tales, viewpoints, hazards, decipherings, and allegations. Although the formal summary doesn’t state this, the program is loosely based on Natalia Grace, a young girl with an uncommon type of dwarfism, who was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett in 2010.
According to the official description by Hulu, “Good American Family” aims to delve into various perspectives, thereby examining themes such as differing viewpoints, prejudice, and emotional wounds.
Initially, as they bring her up alongside their three biological kids, questions about her age and background surface, causing them to wonder if she’s truly who she claims. As they protect their family from what they now see as a potential danger (the daughter), she embarks on a personal journey to uncover her past and future truths. This internal struggle unfolds in the media spotlight and eventually reaches the courtroom.
Since 2010, the tale of Natalia Grace has been widely publicized, as she was left alone in an apartment by the Barnett family who accused her of lying about her age and attempting to harm Kristine. However, after living with two separate families, the Barnetts were initially charged with neglect but these charges were eventually dropped.
The intriguing storyline of Natalia Grace was delved into and scrutinized across three different seasons on Investigation Discovery’s show, titled “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.” This examination encompassed conversations with Natalia herself, as well as her subsequent adoptive families, following the Barnetts.
With Pompeo, Mark Duplass takes on the role of Michael Barnett, while Imogen Faith Reid portrays Natalia. Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Jenny O’Hara make regular appearances in the series.
The original series titled “Good American Family” was established by Katie Robbins. Co-showrunners Robbins and Sarah Sutherland take on the role of executive producers. Additionally, Eric Pompeo, Laura Holstein, Andrew Stearn, Dan Spilo, Niles Kirchner, and Mike Epps are also executive producers. Liz Garbus directed and served as an executive producer for the pilot episode.
The series premieres March 19 with two episodes, followed by weekly releases.
