New ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Comic Reveals Dark Family Secrets This June!

In June, the series ‘The Umbrella Academy‘ will return, presenting a fresh narrative that harks back to its original comic book roots, penned by creators Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics.

According to “The Umbrella Academy: Plan B” synopsis, following the release of The City’s most formidable adversaries from Hotel Oblivion, causing widespread chaos, the Umbrella Academy encounters their toughest battle yet – their own siblings. Referred to as The Sparrows, they have a unique bond with Sir Reginald Hargreeves and their mother that sets them apart. It’s said that no one can cause more harm than family, and this powerful, merciless group will stop at nothing in pursuit of their goal – control, along with the submissive gaze it brings.

The upcoming comic, “Way and Bá” collaboratively write and draw it, with colors provided by Dave Stewart, while Nate Piekos handles the lettering.

It will be released June 11 and is currently available for preorder for $4.99.

Dark Horse announces that Issue #1 will showcase no less than six unique cover designs, each skillfully crafted by talented artists such as Fabio Moon, Claire Roe, Mike del Mundo, Duncan Fegredo, David Aja, and Jill Thompson.

Speaking to EbMaster about continuing “The Umbrella Academy” comics, Way expressed that it would become a unique aspect of his life, much like it is now, if he collaborated with Gabriel again. This isn’t just because they would develop as artists, but also because they’d get to experience the thrill of growing up amidst an extraordinary journey. Each installment of this tale takes on a life of its own, often resembling unpredictable scenarios such as a newborn on a subway or a giant metallic bird plummeting from the sky. This unpredictability makes me just as eager for ‘Plan B’ as I was when we embarked on our journey together with ‘Apocalypse Suite’.

The television series based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s “The Umbrella Academy” comic books concluded its fourth season in August. Notably, there were no regular releases of new comic book issues during this period.

Our deep love for comics allows us unrestricted creativity in storytelling, as Bá shared with EbMaster. Amidst the creation of ‘Hotel Oblivion’, the Netflix phenomenon occurred, fueling our drive to continue shaping our narrative due to the surge of interest in the original comics. Although we continued developing fresh content, the pandemic unexpectedly hindered our progress. However, after regaining our footing, we’ve resumed work on new scripts and the comic has been a source of comfort during these challenging times.

Regarding how storylines from the Netflix version could be incorporated into the “Plan B” comic series focusing on The Sparrows, as depicted in the TV show, Bá explained: “Much like every season of the program, they took aspects from our original tale and adapted it to suit their narrative. They employed concepts we haven’t explored yet, but in a way that deviates from our initial comic book plans. In my view, this is what makes the show so engaging. It started out similarly, but evolved into something entirely distinct, while still retaining certain common elements. So, while readers may encounter elements similar to those seen on the show, such as The Sparrows, they’ll quickly realize what sets our comics apart and why we cherish this medium so much.
