Bill Lawrence on ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4, ‘Scrubs’ Reboot Writers’ Room Coming Together ‘Very Soon’

Noted comedy author Bill Lawrence recently shared some insights about the progress of his revival of “Scrubs” during an interview with EbMaster on the Writers Guild Awards red carpet held in New York over the weekend.

In an interview setting, Lawrence mentioned that he would ask his wife, Christa Miller (formerly of “Scrubs”), if she could join the program whenever her schedule permits.

Lucky for Lawrence, Miller replied: “Of course.”

Following this clarification, the creator of “Scrubs” added: “Currently, we’re assembling our writers. It’s a fantastic experience to witness some of the world’s finest writers worked on that series and they remain good friends, including myself. So, we’re essentially blending the past and present. We’re only now laying the foundations, but I anticipate it will emerge rather quickly.

From 2001 to 2008, ‘Scrubs’ premiered on NBC for its initial seven seasons. After that, it moved to ABC, where it aired for two more seasons from 2009 to 2010. This single-camera comedy was set in Sacred Heart Hospital and offered a humorous look into the lives of interns, doctors, nurses, and even the Janitor, as they went about their hospital duties. The main cast consisted of Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, Neil Flynn, along with Miller playing Jordan Sullivan in a recurring role.

In December, it was made official that Lawrence is developing a fresh installment of the series, through 20th Television, which airs on ABC. Previously, the original series was manufactured by ABC Studios, but due to restructuring within parent company Disney, it’s now part of 20th TV. Notably, Lawrence continues his contract with Warner Bros. Television, and they have made exceptions for him to collaborate with his previous studio partners on “Scrubs.

After years of fan requests and hints about a reunion, Lawrence reveals the reason for choosing this moment to revive the cherished medical comedy series once again.

The writer expressed that after much contemplation, they believe the primary motivation is self-centeredness. It’s because we’re all friends and we cherish our time together. Working on this show was a remarkable experience for everyone involved, whether you were a writer, actor, or crew member. So, we all felt, even if it’s just the camaraderie, why not do it again? That sense of enjoyment is part of the excitement.

At the 77th annual Writers Guild of America East Awards on Saturday, Lawrence received high praise for his comedy writing contributions to “Scrubs,” “Ted Lasso,” “Shrinking,” “Bad Monkey,” “Cougar Town,” and “Spin City.” He was honored with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence.

Despite having information on the “Scrubs” reboot, he’s directing all inquiries about “Ted Lasso” Season 4 (rumored to be getting the go-ahead at Apple TV+) to Ted Lasso himself, the co-creator and lead actor Jason Sudeikis.

Lawrence mentioned to EbMaster that all queries about ‘Ted Lasso’ should be directed towards our fearless leader, Jason Sudeikis. He’s currently in New York City for the ‘SNL’ 50th anniversary special, so it’s likely he’s being asked the same question right now. I suspect his response would be more insightful than mine.
