Celebrate The Start Of NFL Season With Backyard Football ’99, Out Now

Excited news for Pablo Sanchez’s fans! The publisher, Playground Productions, has brought back the Backyard Sports name and released three games in the humorous and animated series. Now, they have made Backyard Football ’99 available on Steam and mobile devices. Similar to its initial launch, the football game features a vibrant team of child athletes, as well as younger depictions of famous NFL veterans.

In the updated version of Backyard Football, legendary sports figures like Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Drew Bledsoe, Jerry Rice, John Elway, Randall Cunningham, and Steve Young return to the team roster. Notably absent is Brett Favre. Instead, Mega Cat Studios has introduced a new character named Chase Downfield as a replacement, making this the first time any remaster of the game includes a fresh addition to the lineup.

In contrast to many real-life NFL athletes returning, the game currently lacks any association with the National Football League. However, in the initial 1999 launch of Backyard Football, players could employ actual NFL team names, insignia, and hues. Now, players can assemble teams such as the Labrador Receivers, Dirty Socks, or Ticklish Tornados instead. It’s worth noting that Backyard Baseball ’01, which was made available on Steam in July, does feature MLB teams and allusions.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia when diving into Backyard Football ’99, even without the presence of Brett Favre or any NFL branding. The game manages to maintain an eerily familiar feel, taking me back to the original CD-ROM version, due to its accurate visuals and audio that perfectly recreate my cherished memories of the classic game.

In a press release commemorating the re-release of Backyard Football ’99, Lindsay Barnett, CEO of Playground Productions, expressed that this game transformed him into an avid football enthusiast. He fondly recalled how the game made understanding strategies, leading teams, and enjoying football enjoyable for people of all ages. With pride, he announced the return of this beloved game just in time for football season.

Upcoming from Playground Productions and Backyard Sports are planned re-releases of Backyard Basketball ’01 and Backyard Hockey ’02, but as of now, specific release dates for these titles have not been disclosed.
