Capcom Analyzed Data to Understand Why People Stopped Playing MH World; Designed Monster Hunter Wilds to Avoid Same Pitfalls

Key Takeaways

Despite the fact that the Monster Hunter series often tops Capcom’s sales charts, the challenge for newcomers and potential player attrition over time are issues that developers find troubling.

This is something the developers discussed when talking to esXX during a preview event we attended.

Capcom’s Data States Players Some Players Don’t Even Reach the “Monster Hunting” Part Before Quitting

We inquired from Capcom about the user-friendliness and accessibility of Monster Hunter Rise, particularly for novice players. The responses came from Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and Director Yuya Tokuda, who addressed our questions through an interpreter.

In creating each Monster Hunter game, our team has always kept in mind the possibility of newcomers starting the series with that title. This thought process was especially true for Monster Hunter World, which we designed as a potential entry point for people who have never played a Monster Hunter game before. Consequently, the game has been enjoyed by players worldwide, attracting many new faces to the series.

The developers pointed out that even though some individuals haven’t played Monster Hunter World and others have started but eventually quit, their team managed to gather data on this using the game itself. They didn’t just focus on where these players stopped playing, but also delved into the reasons why they chose to leave the game.

Furthermore, the developers discussed insights they gained from Monster Hunter World and how these insights are influencing MH Wilds. “We scrutinized our internal data and brainstormed potential ways to mitigate similar issues in Monster Hunter Wilds. We understand that difficulty isn’t the only challenge players face. For many, the core enjoyment of Monster Hunter lies in the battle against monsters. However, we noticed that some players didn’t even get to this engaging part, thus quitting before experiencing the true joy of Monster Hunter. With this in mind, we structured Monster Hunter Wilds to ensure players can reach and enjoy this aspect of the game, potentially leading them to continue playing and truly appreciating Monster Hunter as an enjoyable gaming experience.

In MH Wilds, Capcom has introduced a new feature called the Seikret, which acts as an automatic guide for players to reach monsters more easily. Previously, in earlier Monster Hunter games, some players experienced frustration because they had to aimlessly roam around the map trying to locate the monster they needed to hunt.
