Maya Hawke Says Some Producers Cast Based On Actors’ ‘Collective’ Instagram Following: ‘If You Have Over This Many Followers, You Can Get the Movie Funded’

In certain situations, a movie’s production can heavily depend on the number of followers an actor or actress has on their social media platforms, as suggested by Maya Hawke.

Hawke expressed his indifference towards Instagram during a recent interview on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, stating that it’s not enjoyable for him. He further mentioned that if you have a significant number of followers on Instagram, it could potentially help fund a movie. However, he finds this line to be complex and challenging.

Hawke mentioned that she’s familiar with numerous “intelligent filmmakers” who have run into producers requiring a specific number of Instagram followers among the cast members as a prerequisite for proceeding with a production.

Hawke shared that he considered deleting his Instagram account, to which some directors responded, ‘Just to clarify, when I’m assembling a film crew with producers, they give me a list of the total followers required from the cast,'” Hawke explained. “So if you remove your Instagram and I lose those followers, be aware that these are the types of actors I need to work with in your vicinity.” (or simply: “…be aware that these are the caliber of actors I need to work with near you.”)

Hawke emphasized that while social media following is not a necessity for every director, approximately ten directors can still thrive based purely on their established reputation.

Hawke mentioned that he could truly immerse himself in making films with these individuals. Lucky enough, he’s had the opportunity to collaborate with three such sets over his career. These include working with Quentin Tarantino (‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’), Bradley Cooper (‘Maestro’), and Wes Anderson (‘Asteroid City’).
