Overwatch 2 dev reveals reworks of fan-favorite heroes were scrapped

A developer from Overwatch 2 team shared that they initially intended to revise characters Reaper and Moira, however, these changes have currently been put on hold.

Due to the constant introduction of various characters in each successive season, and the continuous changes within the game, the strategies used in Overwatch (meta) are consistently adapting. Consequently, some character choices may have difficulty fitting into the ever-changing gameplay.

In response to certain issues, Blizzard occasionally makes significant changes to heroes, revamping their abilities and tools, as seen with Sombra and Roadhog as recent instances. However, a developer from Overwatch has disclosed that the planned overhauls for Moira and Reaper have been temporarily postponed.

Moira and Reaper reworks are no longer being worked on

According to OWCavalry’s Senior Systems Designer, Gavin Winter, he informed streamer ‘Emongg’ during the Overwatch Spotlight event that the team had been working on significant updates for Moira and Reaper’s abilities. Unfortunately, these changes didn’t pan out as planned, so they are no longer being actively developed.

For a while now, there’s been talk about revamping Moira, and during the Overwatch 2 beta, this was put to the test. The changes included equipping Moora with a new Necrotic Orb that weakens enemies it touches, decreasing their ability to harm allies significantly, even during D.Va’s Ultimates.

Instead, the planned alterations were eventually abandoned, leaving the Moira character in Overwatch 2 with very few differences from her initial abilities.

In a recent conversation with @emonggtv, Gavin Winters revealed that plans for the redesign of characters Moira and Reaper in Overwatch 2 have been abandoned.

Initially, it was announced that the Reaper would undergo a revamp by the end of 2023, with the intention of updating his abilities. Later on, Alec Dawson disclosed that they had been experimenting with a new secondary skill, but eventually chose not to implement it because it didn’t align with the character.

Since early 2024, there hasn’t been much progress regarding updates, suggesting that the ongoing rework might be temporarily paused.

One possible explanation for this could be the implementation of the new Perks system, which bestows every character with two fresh effects or skills throughout the game. For Reaper, among the options, there’s one called Dire Triggers, which introduces a long-range secondary fire, although it remains uncertain if this is the same one that was discarded earlier.

It’s quite possible that the developers might reconsider the updates for the two heroes down the line. However, considering the impending transformation with the Perks and the arrival of the Stadium mode in Season 16, it seems unlikely that we’ll see these changes anytime in the near future.
