Despite the movie “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” not establishing a cinematic D&D franchise, the iconic role-playing game is getting another opportunity to shine in live-action. Reports suggest that Netflix is working on a new series called “The Forgotten Realms“, which will be overseen by Shawn Levy, who has previously directed films like “Deadpool” and “Wolverine”.
As reported by Deadline, it’s been announced that Drew Crevello will take on the roles of both writer and showrunner for “The Forgotten Realms”. This upcoming production is a collaboration between Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment. The Forgotten Realms is a highly recognized setting among Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) players, with even the movie “Honor Among Thieves” being set within these realms. However, it’s important to note that the upcoming D&D series will not be connected in any way to “Honor Among Thieves” or any previous adaptations of the franchise.
The report implies that this series might initiate a Dungeons & Dragons universe at Netflix, potentially expanding into more series or original films. This development comes after the news that D&D’s parent company, Wizards of the Coast, is also crafting Magic: The Gathering as a shared universe encompassing both movies and television shows. Netflix is currently working on an animated Magic: The Gathering series, yet they are not presently connected to any live-action projects within that universe at this time.
In light of the tremendous triumph of Baldur’s Gate 3, Hasbro is now crafting fresh video games for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. Notably, Dungeons & Dragons was also spotlighted in a self-contained episode of Amazon Prime Video’s Secret Level.
