Film editor Barry Hertz from The Globe and Mail offered a slightly restrained compliment, but expressed his conviction that Bong Joon-ho had complete creative control over this film, which delves into humanity’s darkest impulses. There’s been some concern among hardcore Bong Joon-ho fans about the final version of “Mickey 17,” given Warner Bros.’ adjustments to its release schedule. Filming was completed in 2022, and an initial release date of March 2024 had been scheduled. However, when delays were announced, it was revealed that the move was intended to secure an Imax release window and provide additional time for a comprehensive post-production process. So far, early responses suggest that “Mickey 17” retains the quirky style characteristic of Bong Joon-ho’s other films.

In the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, the movie “Mickey17” features Robert Pattinson as a character who is disposable or replaceable. This individual is sent on perilous missions to colonize an icy planet, only to be reborn with many of his memories after each mission. Alongside Ruffalo, the cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, and Toni Collette.

Mickey 17 will also be shown at this month’s Berlin International Film Festival. The film is set to hit U.S. theaters on March 7th. Its premiere in director Bong Joon-ho’s homeland, South Korea, will take place on February 28th.
