Maya Hawke: Hollywood Producer Told Me ‘I Looked Prettier with My Mouth Closed and I Should Close My Mouth After I Speak … I Was Really Upset’

On a recent installment of “Happy Sad Confused,” Maya Hawke shared an anecdote about a well-known figure in Hollywood once pointing out her habit of keeping her mouth open excessively during filming, suggesting that she would appear more attractive if she kept her mouth closed instead.

A producer or director suggested to me that I should keep my mouth closed more frequently, as they felt it made me look better. I tend to leave my mouth open a lot when acting, as I believe tension in the jaw and mouth can greatly influence how a character is portrayed,” Hawke disclosed.

She went on to say, “The place where you left that is indeed crucial. It upset me greatly when I was advised to close my mouth less in order to appear more attractive, as the character I was portraying was meant to be distinctly self-unconscious. This trait of the character – their lack of concern for beauty and self-consciousness – was intentional, and it seemed like a purely aesthetic preference that caused this suggestion, which I found frustrating.

When Josh Horowitz inquired about my reaction to a specific comment back then, I simply stated, “Well, considering we’ve chatted for half an hour, what might you infer?

Hawke didn’t disclose the person behind the comment, whether director or producer. Apart from her role in “Stranger Things,” which she will reprise for its last season this year, Hawke is primarily recognized for lending her voice to Anxiety in Pixar’s 2021 hit “Inside Out 3” and acting in films like Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” and various other projects.
