Overwatch 2 boss has good news for fans requesting “giant sword” hero

Enthusiasts of Overwatch 2, who are eagerly anticipating a new character wielding a “massive sword,” might find their wishes granted following recent remarks by Game Director Aaron Keller.

At the recent Spotlight event, a variety of fresh elements like Perks and forthcoming gameplay modes were unveiled, along with details about the next two characters set to join the game.

In Season 16, we’ll welcome Freja, an agile and proficient hero equipped with a crossbow for damage output. She also boasts impressive mobility. On the other hand, Hero 44, known as ‘Aqua’, is set to debut two seasons down the line. Aqua will utilize support abilities that are water-based.

A sword-wielding character has not made an appearance so far, but it’s possible that may change in the future. There’s much anticipation surrounding this potential addition.

Overwatch 2 sword hero teased by Game Director

During a stream with OW2 creator Frogger, Aaron Keller stopped by and answered some questions.

When someone wondered aloud if they could create a character wielding an enormous sword, Keller hinted that’s indeed a concept the team has been considering.

“Yeah, what about melee heroes?” Frogger inquired.

The Game Director shared that it’s a topic under consideration, yet they acknowledged its complexity when it comes to creating a design for it.

Keller suggested that there might be something coming up: “I believe we’ve found a way to make it happen.

Previously, Overwatch has dabbled in melee-based characters to some extent, featuring abilities like Genji’s Dragon Blade ultimate, Doomfist’s combat arsenal, Reinhardt’s hammer, and the well-known support character, Brigitte.

On the other hand, none of these characters carried a massive sword like Sephiroth’s from Final Fantasy VII, a weapon that offered considerable reach even though it was primarily for close combat.

It’s intriguing to note that Keller hinted at the possibility that Hero 45 might have been concealed within the latest Spotlight teaser, potentially referring to the character wielding the sword.

The Game Director also hinted that a teaser for Hero 45 is hidden in Spotlight 👀

The user commented, “It appears that the drawing on the far right might be the 45/s20 teaser? I notice it has hair, a sword-like object that could be a tank, another knight, and resembles those chibi drawings, as indicated by a screen grab.

It remains uncertain whether this trailer will feature Hero 45 or another character under the spotlight, but based on hints, it appears that a hero using a sword might be introduced to players in the upcoming releases.
