The live-action “Dungeons & Dragons” TV series has found new life.
According to verified information, Netflix is currently working on a fresh version of the project. Earlier, there was a “DnD” series planned for Paramount+ with an approved order, but it didn’t progress due to strategic changes within Paramount and the sale of co-studio eOne by Hasbro. The new project is being developed in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment as well.
The ongoing series is known as “The Forgotten Realms,” a title inspired by the renowned “DnD” game environment. Previously involved as the showrunner for the Paramount+ project, Drew Crevello will now take on roles as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the Netflix adaptation. Shawn Levy, along with Dan Levine from 21 Laps, will serve as executive producers under their overall TV deal with Netflix.
Reps for Netflix declined to comment.
Earlier, Crevello collaborated in creating and managed as a co-showrunner for the Apple miniseries “WeCrashed.” Additionally, he contributed to the production of movies such as “X-Men: First Class” and “Deadpool” while holding the position of a film executive.
Originating in Lake Geneva, WI back in 1974, “Dungeons & Dragons,” or simply DnD, was conceived by E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. This iconic game has left an indelible mark on the world of gaming, as players craft diverse characters hailing from various fantasy realms – elves, orcs, dwarves among them – and immerse themselves in intricate role-playing adventures across a myriad of settings and narratives.
Previous adaptations of “Dungeons & Dragons” for the screen include a cartoon TV series from the 80s and live-action films starting in 2000. More recently, the action-comedy “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” released in 2023, was successful, earning over $205 million globally.
