This piece was initially released on April 6th, 2022. Since then, we’ve added additional films to the list in anticipation of Valentine’s Day.
In the ’90s, an electrifying subgenre captivated me, a sublime blend of sex and transgression, a melting pot that united the sophisticated tastes of film connoisseurs with the casual moviegoer. This genre was like the old Times Square cinema where everyone could lose themselves in something provocative and thrilling. As an individual on the asexual spectrum, I found myself drawn to this steamy section at the video store. Despite the concept of “guilty pleasures” being a misnomer – love what you love without apology – if there’s one category of films that often gets tucked away in a discreet corner, it’s this intoxicating subgenre of erotic thrillers.
Even though we might not receive as many fresh erotic thrillers as we’d prefer (or what we truly merit!), there’s an alluring and steamy collection ready for your perusal at any moment. We’ve assembled a roster of films you can stream or rent instantly through various platforms, supplemented by four additional recommendations for the ones you likely already know. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur in the realm of erotic cinema or just beginning to test the waters, prepare some ambiance with Linda Fiorentino and a small tribute to Adrian Lyne: It’s high time to indulge in movies that demand you draw the curtains.
American Gigolo (1980)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=NTavf-5Mdpo
Back in the ’70s, I had already been making a name for myself in gripping crime dramas. However, it was the movie “American Gigolo,” penned and directed by Paul Schrader, that truly established me as an idol in the realm of erotic thrillers. In this film, I portray Julian, a high-class escort who’s living the good life, thanks to his content clients. But things take a dark turn when I’m called to serve a powerful couple – Tom Stewart and Patricia Carr. Their desires are far from ordinary, crossing lines that make me uncomfortable. After the encounter, the wife is found dead, and I become the prime suspect in her murder. With no one else coming to my aid, it falls on me to clear my name before the law catches up. Catch this classic thriller on Paramount+ with Showtime to see how it all unfolds!
Body Heat (1981)
If your movie is centered around the plot point, “initiates a fiery romance with a character portrayed by Kathleen Turner,” then you’re in for some fantastic material. The timeless erotic thriller, Body Heat, is a must-see in this genre. It was penned and helmed by Lawrence Kasdan and boasts an impressive ensemble featuring Turner, William Hurt, Ted Danson, and Mickey Rourke. Notably, Rourke’s character manufactures explosives. A plot unfolds where a spouse is targeted for assassination so the lovers can escape with the ill-gotten gains. Turner delivers an unforgettable debut performance and a voice that could strip you of your clothes effortlessly. Get ready to be smitten! (Can be rented on Prime Video.)
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)
In the film adaptation of James M. Cain’s 1934 novel “The Postman Always Rings Twice,” written by David Mamet, Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange take on intense roles as the two main characters. A drifter wanders into a diner owned by her husband, and sparks fly between them. As he agrees to work on their property, they embark on a passionate affair that leads to sexual encounters, murderous schemes, and Lange’s character becoming increasingly erratic, eventually screaming at Nicholson until her voice quivers and cracks in her distinctive manner. The film can be rented on Apple TV and Prime Video.
Crimes of Passion (1984)
Has the name Kathleen Turner been mentioned? She’s back in the mix, starring in the provocative film ‘Crimes of Passion‘, a production by Ken Russell that takes you from sensual seduction to full-blown romantic escapades. In this movie, John Laughlin portrays a husband tired of his marriage, as his partner has lost interest in intimacy. Kathleen Turner plays China Blue, a woman who juggles roles in fashion and as an escort. As Laughlin’s character Bobby is hired to watch China, it’s no surprise that he becomes smitten with the silver-wigged night owl. Additionally, Anthony Perkins portrays a deranged preacher fixated on China Blue. This film is not for the faint of heart, but it’s impossible to look away! (Streamable on Pluto TV>.>)
Stripped to Kill (1987)
titled “Stripped to Kill,” this movie centers around a police officer who assumes the role of a stripper in an undercover operation, targeting a murderer who preys upon exotic dancers. Notably, this film directed by Katt Shea is brimming with intricate and almost avant-garde stripping sequences. In the initial 15 minutes alone, several strip scenes unfold and a woman is set on fire, which sets the stage for the rest of the movie’s gritty and intense atmosphere. (Streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.)
Dead Ringers (1988)
David Cronenberg has a fascination with the human body, often portraying it in unique ways that push the boundaries of conventional thinking. In his film “Dead Ringers,” he explores the bond between twin brothers who are both gifted gynecologists, sharing their professional and personal lives. However, for Cronenberg, this is one of his more approachable works. The story revolves around these twins, portrayed by Jeremy Irons, who are inextricably linked through their career, home, and even romantic interests. But when one of the brothers, Beverly, develops feelings for a woman named Claire (Geneviève Bujold), it disrupts their routine and creates tension that pushes them towards insanity. The film features twin eroticism, escalating drug addiction, stylish surgical attire, and even gynecological tools reminiscent of medieval torture devices. You can watch this intriguing movie on Peacock, Pluto TV, or Prime Video.
Impulse (1990)
The poster for the movie “Impulse” reads, “She’s a covert police officer, lured by illusion, ensnared in a puzzle. Driven by a perilous instinct.” Isn’t it frustrating when you find yourself tangled in a riddle? Theresa Russell portrays the undercover cop who works as a prostitute, and the movie’s Amazon description provides additional insight into her character: “There’s something wild, dangerous, and slightly kinky about Lottie Mason. That’s why she’s Los Angeles’ top undercover vice officer, but it also suggests she may have crossed a line.” The film’s succinct synopsis is undeniably captivating, making one curious to discover how far Lottie might have ventured. (Impulse is now available for rent on Apple TV and Prime Video.)
Traces of Red (1992)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=Mdx7zym2Fm0
The film titled “Traces of Red” is set at the crossroads of two steamy genres: erotic thrillers and Florida-based crime dramas. In this production, James Belushi assumes the role of a homicide detective, who ironically finds himself in an unusual predicament – he’s gradually becoming the main suspect in a series of grisly murders. The victims are women whose lips bear the telltale marks of the murderer’s lipstick. This movie offers a slew of sinister and sensual twists, featuring Lorraine Bracco and Tony Goldwyn as part of an impressive supporting cast. (Streamable on Tubi.)
Whispers in the Dark (1992)
As a movie connoisseur, let me share my thoughts on “Whispers in the Dark”. This film’s plot seems to have been crafted by an intriguing blend of an erotic-thriller Mad Lib creator. In this gripping tale, Annabella Sciorra delivers a captivating performance as a therapist who becomes entangled in a web of forbidden love and dangerous secrets.
Her patient is involved in a sordid affair with a man who shares a twisted fascination for rough sex. As the narrative unfolds, Sciorra’s character uncovers a chilling truth: her new lover might be the same man who was her patient’s secret paramour. The terrifying possibility that he could be responsible for her patient’s untimely demise sets the stage for a psychological rollercoaster ride.
Adding to the intrigue, Deborah Unger plays a pivotal role in this thriller, and John Leguizamo lends his talent to the mix for an unexpected twist. If you’re up for a suspenseful journey filled with psychoanalysis, steamy encounters, hidden lovers, and a dash of John Leguizamo, “Whispers in the Dark” is now available for rental on Apple TV+ and Prime Video.
Body of Evidence (1993)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=2kb-bwcBFOU
For those seeking captivating drama with a hint of scandal, “Body of Evidence” is just the ticket. Starring Julianne Moore and Madonna during her “Erotica” phase, this film delivers in spades. The story revolves around an elderly man’s death, with his fortune left to his mistress (Madonna’s character, Rebecca Carlson). This turn of events raises suspicions for the district attorney, Joe Mantegna, who suspects Rebecca of murdering the man for financial gain. An age-old tactic indeed! Notably, Madonna’s legal counsel is played by Willem Dafoe, and their relationship takes a dangerous turn. Essentially, it’s a thrilling blend of romance and suspense. (You can catch it streaming on Pluto TV and Tubi.)
Dream Lover (1993)
When considering erotic thrillers, you may associate them with the 1990s, but there’s one actress you might not immediately think of – Mädchen Amick. In retrospect, she should have graced our screens in a dozen such films during that decade, but alas, we only got a handful. One of these rare appearances is a hidden gem. In this film, Amick and James Spader share the screen as an alluring character who leaves Spader spellbound. Despite her warnings that she’s not just a pretty façade for his fantasies, Spader remains convinced he sees the real her beyond her beauty. Can you imagine that he’s terribly mistaken? What sets “Dream Lover” apart is its initial adherence to traditional erotic thriller tropes until the halfway point, after which you’re thrown into a whirlwind of unexpected twists and turns. Amick exudes both sensuality and danger, while Spader delivers a compelling performance as the foolish man driven by his desires. And since this is from the 90s, there are lengthy sequences dedicated to Spader’s dreams of being in a circus. (Streaming on Pluto TV and Tubi)
The Crush (1993)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=YNOqDEK1ZNY&t=18s
One key phrase that kicks off the film “The Crush” is: “Presenting Alicia Silverstone.” Known as one of the iconic faces of the 1990s, she first graced the silver screen in this provocative thriller where a teenage girl named Rena (played by Alicia) becomes infatuated with Nick Eliot (portrayed by Cary Elwes), a guest living in her parents’ home. The entire movie is filled with eccentricities. Notably, it was penned and directed by Alan Shapiro, who drew inspiration from personal experiences. It’s intriguing to consider the situation where a grown man creates a film that essentially claims, “Your Honor, I was seduced by the 14-year-old.” At the very least, this peculiar background adds depth to the film.
Despite her young age, Silverstone captivates the screen with a chilling portrayal of a manipulative teenager. At just 15, she fought for and was granted legal emancipation to work on the film. It’s astonishing that such a fresh face could command so much attention in front of the camera. The name “Adrian” in the movie may sound strange to some, as it wasn’t the original girl’s real name. The production was sued for using her actual name, Darian, in the script without permission. They lost the lawsuit, leading to a dubbed version following its release. This film serves as a compelling example of the obsession with ‘Lolita’-themed films during the 90s. (Streaming on Peacock, Prime Video, and Tubi.) There’s a lot to discuss there!
Malice (1993)
Aaron Sorkin made a significant debut with his Academy Award-nominated initial film, “A Few Good Men.” Subsequently, within a year, he released “Malice,” which didn’t receive any Academy Awards but showcased a young, dark-haired Alec Baldwin portraying a surgeon and famously saying the line “I am God” in a deposition following a malpractice lawsuit. Prior to her fame as Babygirl, Nicole Kidman was cast in “Malice,” playing a newlywed wedded to Bill Pullman. The duo leases part of their home to Baldwin’s character Dr. Jed Hill, who ultimately performs an emergency surgery on her, leading to a substantial settlement against Jed. Furthermore, a rapist is on the loose, family secrets are being uncovered, and Pullman becomes suspicious of Kidman’s honesty. These events only scratch the surface of this thrilling plot (available for rental on Amazon Prime Video).
Sliver (1993)
Prepare yourselves, everyone. We’re about to delve into a Sharon Stone film from the ’90s, which promises an increased dose of sensuality. In the movie “Sliver,” Stone plays Carly Norris, a New York City woman who works in publishing, the go-to profession for the genre’s chicest characters. After a tenant who bears a striking resemblance to her falls from a high-rise balcony, Carly moves into a new apartment building and catches the eye of several male residents. One of these is the charming Zeke Hawkins (William Baldwin), who becomes obsessed with pursuing Carly as more tenants meet untimely ends. The film also features extensive peeping tom scenes and an unappealing performance by Tom Berenger. Directed by Phillip Noyce, this is a true example of a director’s journey through the genre. It may not make headlines like some of Stone’s other work, but it’s definitely worth your time. (Streamable on Pluto TV).
Color of Night (1994)
Describing the movie “Color of Night” might not do it justice, as it straddles the line between erotic thriller and other elements. To put it simply, it’s a resounding yes to all those aspects. Although you can stream the theatrical version, we strongly advise seeking out the director’s cut, which runs approximately two hours and 40 minutes, as it offers a more satisfying experience.
Bruce Willis portrays a therapist who attends a group session led by another therapist friend, played by Scott Bakula. When Bakula is eliminated from the storyline, Willis takes over his patients’ care, one of whom might be a murderer. Be on the lookout for suspect characters in this film.
Leslie Ann Warren delivers a memorable performance as a character reminiscent of a bimbo, while Susan Sarandon also features. The cast includes Brad Dourif, Lance Henriksen, Kevin J. O’Connor, among others. However, the true standout isn’t Willis; it’s Jane March in a role that likely didn’t pay her enough for the experience she provided.
Rumors suggest that the producers took control of the movie away from the director and made drastic cuts before its theatrical release. The director’s cut features approximately 20 minutes of additional footage, which is probably where most of the good stuff can be found. Don’t miss the explicit cooking scene, and stick around for nude scenes featuring Bruce Willis. (Available to rent on Apple TV and Prime Video.)
Disclosure (1994)
In the 1990s, erotic thrillers were extremely popular, and no one exploited this lucrative period better than Michael Douglas, a man who seemed destined to portray villains onscreen, eventually succumbing to the relentless seduction of cunning women. Before Hollywood began reimagining stories with gender-swapped roles, Disclosure posed an intriguing question: “What if a woman played the aggressor, and this upstanding family man was merely trying to do right when a mesmerizing femme fatale appeared to wreak havoc on his life?” Imagine that scenario! Fortunately, the scheming female executive in this story is Demi Moore, whose sultry voice drips with disdain as she systematically disrupts Douglas’s life. First, she takes his job. Then she attempts to seize control of his entire existence. And you are left pondering: Is it commendable … ? (Rentable on Apple TV and Prime Video)
Jade (1995)
Whenever the topic turns to erotic thrillers, it’s common for someone to exclaim “The Last Seduction!”, and yes, the film is outstanding; it’s a classic. However, constantly citing this movie first when discussing Linda Fiorentino’s work in the erotic thriller genre seems unfair given her other significant contributions. Instead, let’s talk about a movie that offers more of a true thrill (The Last Seduction leans more towards dark comedy if we’re being honest). Let me suggest Jade. Despite its lukewarm reputation, this film features David Caruso delivering a gripping performance as a detective unraveling a series of high-profile murders connected to kinky sex. Fiorentino shines in this movie as well, reminding us why her absence from the screen has been deeply felt for years. Notably, Jade showcases one of the era’s most beautiful cinematic landscapes: the city of San Francisco. (It’s available to rent on Apple TV.)
Bound (1996)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=ToCMwdOaWh4
In this timeless crime thriller filled with passion, Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon take center stage as two women who discover an intense bond while plotting to eliminate a dangerous man keeping them apart. Gershon portrays Corky, a newly released prison inmate with a background in construction and lesbianism, who catches the eye of Violet (Tilly) in an elevator encounter. Joe Pantoliano co-stars as Caesar, Violet’s abusive and criminal boyfriend who must be dealt with.
This film marks the directorial debut of Lilly and Lana Wachowski, who would later captivate audiences with The Matrix and the unconventional casting of Channing Tatum as a human dog in Jupiter Ascending. Before they took us on those journeys, they created a classic “Be Gay, Do Crime” masterpiece with this film. (Streaming on Pluto TV.)
Crash (1996)
Among the films on this list, none quite compare to the intense experience of watching “Crash”. This movie, with a hint of Cronenberg’s signature style, delves into the realm of erotic thrillers in an unconventional way. If you’re unfamiliar with it, brace yourself for a journey that not many films of this genre dare to take. James Spader plays a film producer who, in a reckless driving incident, kills a man and injures a woman (Holly Hunter as Helen). As Spader’s character recovers, he crosses paths with Helen in the hospital, sparking a relationship that is deeply rooted in their shared erotic fascination with car collisions. This affair leads James into an underground subculture where individuals share this extreme fetish for automobile accidents. The question arises: just how far will they go to satisfy their desires? Dive into the story and remember to always drive safely! (Streaming on Kanopy.)
Devil in the Flesh (1998)
If you’ve ever yearned to witness Rose McGowan portray a character handling a shotgun while inquiring, “Why can’t you love me?”, then I have fantastic news! The long wait for such an intriguing scenario has finally come to an end. In the movie titled “Devil in the Flesh “, McGowan, reminiscent of her character from “Jawbreaker“, embodies the seductive persona of Courtney Shayne. She stars as Debbie, a young woman who is both strikingly attractive and troubled, following the death of her mother in a fire, leaving her under the supervision of her sternly religious grandmother. With a rising body count surrounding Debbie, she becomes smitten with an English teacher at her new school. The narrative includes parental figures mysteriously meeting their demise, a domineering grandma standing as an obstacle for our unstable protagonist, and an illicit crush on the schoolteacher. Are you not captivated? (The film is available to stream on The Roku Channel and Tubi.)
Wild Things (1998)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=M6DsFyC9l-U
If you’re part of the geriatric millennial generation, it’s quite possible that you have a significant connection with the movie “Wild Things,” a film that stands out as the first screen appearance of a threesome and/or first depiction of a penis on screen for many viewers. This movie isn’t just an excellent erotic thriller; it’s also a brilliant portrayal of Florida crime, with nothing being more enticing than the allure of Florida’s criminal underbelly.
In this captivating story, Neve Campbell and Denise Richards play teenagers who look incredibly mature, accusing their guidance counselor, played by Matt Dillon, of a heinous crime. The shocking events that unfold disrupt the tranquil seaside town of Blue Bay, with gruff detective Kevin Bacon on their trail as he attempts to uncover the truth behind the lies.
Though the movie is filled with sensation, it’s crucial not to overlook Campbell and Richards’ superb performances as they transform trashy material into a tantalizing five-course meal of sexual intrigue. Kudos also go to composer George S. Clinton for his work on this film as well as “Red Shoe Diaries” – an unexpected yet fitting connection. (The movie is available for rent on Apple TV and Prime Video.)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
If you’re looking for an intense, erotic thriller, then the legendary Stanley Kubrick has just what you need. The movie, titled “Eyes Wide Shut“, is a captivating piece of art that spans nearly three hours. It was Kubrick’s last directorial effort, one of Tom Cruise’s final films featuring any hint of sexual content, and a daring collaboration between two powerhouses of Hollywood during the late 20th century. In this film, Cruise and his then-wife Nicole Kidman portray a troubled married couple. Cruise’s character becomes increasingly obsessed after discovering that his wife has been harboring desires for another man. The movie was released in 1999, an era when major stars still dabbled in explicit erotica and the concept of an on-screen orgy was still shocking – something you might stumble upon only once a week on the latest streaming TV service. How innocent we were back then! (Rentable on Prime Video.)
The In Crowd (2000)
You may recognize Mary Lambert from her work on the horror film “Pet Sematary,” but let me introduce you to one of her lesser-known works from the 2000s genre scene. “The In Crowd” has a soap opera feel, similar to what we would later see in shows like “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl,” while also riding the wave of popularity for teen slasher films sparked by “Scream.” Despite being marketed as a slasher, it’s actually a light erotic thriller set in an elite country club during summer break.
The wealthy and bored college students find themselves attracted to Lori Heuring’s character, Adrien, who is working at the club but is so attractive she can bypass the velvet rope. The role of the controlling gatekeeper is played by Susan Ward as Brittany, a beautiful yet dangerous character that Ward portrays with chilling precision.
This film is essentially a tribute to Susan Ward, who should have been starring in Lifetime movies about seducing men for years, but our world isn’t always fair. Ward is the Denise Richards of Kari Wuhrers (watch “Wild Things 2” for reference), and her sexually opportunistic femme fatale is what makes this often-overlooked 2000s gem shine. (Rentable on Prime Video.)
Cruel Intentions 2 (2002)
As a film enthusiast, I must say that “Cruel Intentions 2” might not blow you away with its brilliance if you’re already familiar with it. However, if you’re new to this cinematic world, it will certainly surprise you to witness Amy Adams taking over Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role as the charming yet sinister Kathryn Merteuil. What makes it even more intriguing is that “CI2” is actually a prequel! This means we get to see the origins of the psychosexual relationship between Adams’s character, Merteuil, and Robin Dunne’s Sebastian Valmont. Adams’s performance in this role is nothing short of extraordinary, proving once again why she deserves multiple Oscars. Although “Cruel Intentions 2” might not be the most prestigious production, Adams delivers a captivating performance that more than fills Gellar’s iconic designer shoes. As the saying goes, there are no small parts, only small actors! Even in this early-career sequel-prequel, Adams shines brightly. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to pay your respects. You can stream it on Tubi.
Swimfan (2002)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=XHn7nuaRbaI
Congratulations, 00’s teenagers! Your champion is here to speak for you. If you’re yearning for a tale about teens filled with secrets and deceit, or if you’d like to revisit the excitement of sleepovers or experience it for the first time, then look no further than this gripping movie about an accomplished high-school swimmer who succumbs to the charms of a new girl with a potentially harmful infatuation. Jesse Bradford plays the lead in this 00’s themed film as the heartthrob athlete. This movie also features Erika Christensen giving a raw and emotional performance that leaves many characters in shambles. Swimfan is an excellent choice for a Friday night popcorn flick. (Now available to rent on Apple TV and Prime Video.)
Unfaithful (2002)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=RSHTmIucNNI
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant impact Adrian Lyne has had on the erotic thriller genre. He’s the one who made hearts race with the provocative ‘9 1/2 Weeks’, and then refined the formula with the gripping ‘Fatal Attraction’. After that, we saw ‘Indecent Proposal’ and a foray into even riskier territories with ‘Lolita’. But it was his 2002 work, ‘Unfaithful’, that truly left an indelible mark. Diane Lane delivered an Oscar-nominated performance as a woman who strays from her marriage vows in an affair with Olivier Martinez. While Richard Gere is a timeless sex symbol, here he plays the oblivious husband discovering his wife’s infidelities with the irresistibly attractive Martinez. This is a tale of taboo desires wrapped in a polished package. (Now available for rent on Apple TV and Prime Video).
In the Cut (2003)
It’s incredibly captivating when esteemed filmmakers present intriguing, adult-themed content. Respectfully speaking, Jane Campion, who directed “In the Cut” and adapted the screenplay from Susanna Moore’s novel of the same name, is a two-time Academy Award winner whose subtle yet powerful films like “The Piano” and “The Power of the Dog” are highly admired. However, we also enjoy characters entangled in illicit affairs, such as a potential crime witness and the detective investigating it. In this film, Meg Ryan portrays Frannie, a New York City teacher who initiates a steamy relationship with Detective Malloy (played by Mark Ruffalo), despite her suspicions that he might be linked to a grisly crime discovered in her garden. This is certainly not the family-friendly Hulk persona we’re accustomed to seeing from Mark Ruffalo! (Available for rental on Prime Video.)
Lust, Caution (2007)
From the novel penned by Eileen Chang, the critically acclaimed film “Lust, Caution” directed by Ang Lee received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was given an NC-17 rating in the U.S. due to its explicit sexual content. This visually stunning movie offers a breathtaking portrayal of 1938 Hong Kong and 1952 Shanghai, with remarkable production design. The narrative revolves around Wong Chia Chi, a secret agent during World War II played by Wei Tang, who is tasked with seducing and assassinating Mr. Yee (Tony Leung), a government official working under the Japanese-installed administration. However, erotic thrillers are known for their unexpected twists, and Chi’s mission becomes complicated when she finds herself developing feelings for Yee. Delve into this sophisticated, steamy tale. (Rentable on Apple TV+).
Chloe (2009)
In the realm of erotic thrillers, powerhouses like Glenn Close, Sharon Stone, and Linda Fiorentino instantly spring to mind. However, remember Julianne Moore as well, a fearless actress who consistently pours her heart into roles that delve into forbidden and transgressive territory, from “Boogie Nights” to “Body of Evidence” and beyond. While “Chloe” may not be the pinnacle of her career in terms of dark, sensual material, it’s a playful dip into the mud.
Set in 2009, this pulpy drama finds Moore as Catherine, convinced that her husband (Liam Neeson) is unfaithful. To confirm her suspicions, she hires a sex worker (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce him. However, their business arrangement gradually transforms into a complex relationship, with Catherine requesting vivid details of each encounter between the husband and Seyfried’s character, Chloe.
Certainly, “Chloe” explores themes that have been problematic in the history of erotic thrillers, such as queerphobia. Nevertheless, it’s essential to let go of preconceived notions and enjoy the film’s allure. So, if you’re ready, immerse yourself in the captivating world of “Chloe,” now available for rental on Prime Video.
The Housemaid (2010)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=3Ayoaqh3SBs
If you’re interested in exploring some internationally-flavored erotic mysteries, take a look at the intriguing tale of passion, deceit, and upper-class ennui called The Housemaid. This film stars Jeon Do-yeon as a new nanny for a pregnant woman (Seo Woo) in the household of Lee Jung-jae. As you might expect, complications arise when the nanny and the husband embark on an affair. The betrayed wife soon catches on, leading to a downward spiral for everyone involved. The story concludes in a surprising finale that differs greatly from what you’d typically find in American films of similar genre. If you enjoy it, don’t forget to check out the 1960 film upon which this one is based. (Streamable on AMC+.)
Stranger by the Lake (2013)
The Handmaiden (2016)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=whldChqCsYk
Erotic thrillers, known for being captivatingly lowbrow, manage to entice even the most discerning moviegoers. While some of these films are genuinely excellent, they also cater to our deepest desires. The Handmaiden, a sensual and magnificent work by Park Chan-wook, is arguably the best example in this genre. This masterpiece garnered praise from film awards bodies worldwide before being overlooked by the Oscars, but every scene is like a painting and each plot twist is a shocking surprise in this mesmerizing blend of drama, suspense, dark comedy, and eroticism from South Korea.
The story revolves around three principal characters: a smooth-talking swindler (Ha Jung-woo), an accomplice who’s been drafted into their scheme (Kim Tae-ri), and a wealthy heiress confined to her home (Kim Min-hee). These three are entangled in a deceitful love triangle. The con artists aim for the rich girl’s fortune, but things become complex when the women begin to feel affection for each other. However, is this a blossoming romance or just another layer of deceit? The acting is compelling, the visuals are stunning, the intimate scenes are intense, and the betrayals are pulse-pounding. (The film is available for rent on Fandango.)
Double Lover (2017)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=MnvnP3EThn4
If you’re familiar with the work of director François Ozon, known for his films such as “See the Sea” and “Swimming Pool”, then you should be prepared for themes that are sensual and boundary-pushing. When you step into “Double Lover”, expect an unusual opening scene featuring a gynecological perspective and a speculum entering a vagina. The narrative revolves around Chloé, portrayed by Marine Vacth, who develops a romantic relationship with her therapist, Paul, played by Jérémie Renier. However, things take a twist when Chloé encounters another analyst who bears a striking resemblance to her boyfriend – yes, you guessed it, he’s Paul’s twin brother! This mysterious man believes he can heal Chloé through treatments involving intimacy. As the story unfolds, Chloé uncovers secrets about her lovers that will remind fans of David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers”, a classic erotic doppelganger thriller. (“Double Lover” is now streaming on AMC+ and Tubi.)
Benedetta (2021)
Is there anyone who creates films like Paul Verhoeven, known for his blend of sensuality and satire in movies that appeal to discerning viewers? Verhoeven’s works often fall into two categories: erotic cinema filled with psychological thrills or comedic portrayals of extreme violence tailored for American audiences. In the case of Benedetta, we find ourselves delving into the world of a 17th-century nun (the main character) who faces trouble when she begins engaging in sexual relationships with another nun within her convent. However, it’s Benedetta’s stigmata and provocative visions that spark controversy, causing unrest among society surrounding the church. This film is inspired by Judith C. Brown’s book, Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, which carries a title fitting for television erotic-thrillers. The movie even features a sex toy fashioned from a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. Here’s to more intriguing films based on real-life lesbian nuns! (Benedetta is now streaming on AMC+ and Hulu.)
The Voyeurs (2021)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=_fiCdELSwwI
If you’re lamenting the decline of the erotic thriller genre but haven’t watched “The Voyuers” from 2021, are you genuinely passionate about it or just following trends? On the other hand, if you’re tweeting about Sydney Sweeney’s performances in shows like “Euphoria” and expressing excitement over her role, but aren’t exploring her work as a sexy optometrist in this intricate thriller, are you truly invested in her or simply riding the popular wave? Michael Mohan penned and directed this steamy production that centers around a pair (Sweeney and Justice Smith) who receive an exceptional apartment with a unique condition: no curtains can be hung. This leads them to form unusual connections with the people they can spy on across the way, particularly a captivating couple (Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Ben Hardy) with a volatile romantic relationship right in their line of sight. The main characters, Pippa (Sweeney) and Seb (Smith), become increasingly engrossed in the voyeuristic pleasure of watching their attractive neighbors, with Pippa’s fascination escalating into an obsession. The tension heightens when a tragic event occurs across the way, forcing Pippa to grapple with her responsibilities towards the unaware woman who may be oblivious to her husband’s extramarital activities. “The Voyeurs” culminates in a truly bizarre climax. If you genuinely yearn for the return of the erotic thriller, this movie is a must-watch (available for rental on Fandango).
Deep Water (2022)
Few directors have delved as deeply into the realm of eroticism as Adrian Lyne, who consistently delivers films filled with sensuality and passion. From seductive thrillers like ‘Fatal Attraction’ and ‘Unfaithful’, to steamy dramas such as ‘Indecent Proposal’ and ‘9 1/2 Weeks’, it’s clear that Lyne has a particular knack for convincing actors to bare it all on camera. Though ‘Flashdance’ might not be an erotic thriller, remember the memorable scenes it left you with! Fortunately for Lyne, he has persisted in filmmaking long enough to collaborate with Ana de Armas, who embraces daring and provocative roles.
Though ‘Deep Water’ was marketed as a standard erotic thriller (complete with trailers hinting at murder and handjobs!), it’s arguably the most peculiar film Lyne has ever made. Starring Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck as a troubled married couple, the movie seamlessly combines elements from Lyne’s extensive career into a unique blend of genres. The tone is reminiscent of a milkshake that continually tantalizes with suspense while serving up dry wit and biting comedy — scenes such as Affleck spending time with snails and debating the ethics of developing tech for military drones with Tracy Letts are prime examples.
Since none of the characters in this film appear to have traditional jobs, they instead indulge in activities like tending to snails, infidelity, and riding bicycles that are too small for them. Additionally, the unexpected car chase scene of 2022 is noteworthy. ‘Deep Water’ is currently available to stream on Hulu and The Roku Channel.
