PlayStation will make more family friendly games, but won’t abandon games-services altogether

It appears that the triumph of Astro Bot, a 3D platformer developed by Team Asobi, has given Sony quite a bit to ponder upon this year.

During a discussion with financial backers, Hiroki Totoki, head of the Japanese business, expressed his delight over the prosperity of Astro Bot.

  1. It’s not just about financial results (the title sold over 1.5 million copies).
  2. Totoki also emphasized that the game has won many awards, including being chosen as the Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
  3. Sony now wants to follow up and plans to release more family friendly games.

Additionally, Totoki also verified that Sony is considering expanding their portfolio with further games-as-a-service offerings. He backed up his statement by referencing the success of Helldivers 2.

Reason for optimism

In general, the Sony head’s statement gives cause for optimism.

Back in the day, our company boasted numerous engaging games that attracted both young and old. Titles like LittleBigPlanet, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time were among them. Regrettably, most of these brands are now inactive. However, this generation has seen a fresh addition to only one series – Ratchet & Clank.

It’d be wonderful if the popularity of Astro Bot leads the company to boost its funding in this area, since players stand to gain significantly from such an investment.
