Monster Hunter World is just two weeks from now, yet its previous version, Monster Hunter World, continues to fly off the shelves at an impressive rate, with sales still happening seven years after its debut launch.
Absolutely! I can’t get enough of Monster Hunter World; it’s been raking in the dough for Capcom, as Automaton Media (via IGN Japan) reveals. In their latest financial report, they noted a boost from 27 million copies sold back in September to an impressive 28.1 million. And let me tell you, the sales of the expansion Iceborne were no slouch either, moving around 900,000 units during the last quarter of 2024. It’s a thrill to be part of such a successful gaming community!
It appears that the significant decrease in the game’s price by Capcom during November and December, making it available for less than £10 or $10, likely played a role in its popularity. However, I also believe that the extraordinary enthusiasm surrounding Wilds, which even as an experienced Monster Hunter fan, I didn’t foresee, has significantly contributed to its success.
Without a doubt, that booth was the star attraction at Gamescom last August, boasting queues as long as 10 hours just to play it, which took up an astonishing amount of room on the exhibition floor and caused disruptions for other exhibitors on the initial day. Capcom eventually had to impose a limit, reducing the wait time to a still-impressive four hours, and turning away eager hunters when the line became too long. Furthermore, it is currently the most desired game on Steam, surpassing big names such as Hollow Knight: Silksong and Elden Ring Nightrein in terms of wishlists.
During those past three months, there was the initial open beta for Monster Hunter Wilds, offering a chance to play without traveling to Germany or spending hours in line. Although it was exciting to play, many PC users experienced poor performance due to suboptimal optimizations, leading me to ponder if this issue may have steered novice players towards World, providing a better introduction to the essence of Monster Hunter.
Primarily, I’ve been discussing the World in my discourse, as it shares a lot of similarities with the Wilds in terms of its essence. However, Monster Hunter Rise has also been doing quite well recently. It managed to sell approximately 700,000 copies within the same three-month period, which is quite impressive if you ask me.
It’s quite exciting to witness the Monster Hunter phenomenon gaining momentum at full speed currently. More people experimenting with one of the most thrilling action game series available today can only be a good sign, and I hope that enough of these newcomers have enjoyed World enough to transition to Wilds later this month. Even if they don’t, it seems that Capcom is not overly concerned. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto expressed his “high confidence” in the game’s success, and based on everything I’ve seen, I share his optimism.
