Disney Reverts to the Last Trump Administration

Individuals with a Disney+ subscription can travel back to earlier periods by watching classic Disney films such as Dumbo or Peter Pan, but it won’t be all the way to the ’40s or ’50s when those movies were produced; instead, we’re talking about 2019. According to Axios, Disney sent a letter to its employees on February 11 to reconsider some of its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. Among the changes, they are abandoning their Reimagine Tomorrow initiative that highlighted underrepresented employees and ceasing to use “Diversity & Inclusion” as a factor in evaluating executive compensation. Additionally, Disney will revert to a more general content warning on Disney+, which will play before movies containing racially charged characters or stereotypical portrayals of ethnic minorities, such as crows named “Jim Crow” or offensive depictions of Native Americans, according to Axios, although the company did not mention this change in the employee note. The new warning will simply state: “This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.

The 2020 warning issued was more extensive and explicitly addressed problematic content. As the statement explained, “This program contains negative portrayals and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were inappropriate then and remain so now.” Instead of eliminating this content, we choose to acknowledge its damaging effects, learn from it, and foster a dialogue for a more inclusive future. The original warning by BBC was: “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain cultural depictions that are no longer acceptable.” Essentially, the updated version retains most of the original content but omits the word “no longer” in reference to unacceptable cultural depictions.
