Incorporating the iconic silenced PP7 and Klobb weapons was essential for GoldenEye 007, but when Activision developed the Wii remake, they encountered resistance from James Bond film rights holders who were hesitant about gun usage in the game, as stated by Bobby Kotick, former head of Activision, during his discussion on creating a new GoldenEye game in 2010.
During an episode on the Grit podcast, Bobby Kotick delved into a conversation about the Nintendo 64, stating that it was the original “GoldenEye” game that ultimately drove the system’s sales. He further discussed the 2010 remake of GoldenEye 007 for Wii. Kotick explained that creating a sequel to the game was difficult due to Barbara Broccoli, co-owner of the James Bond film franchise rights, being opposed to violence and guns in the game.

Kotick expresses confidence that Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson are competent guardians of the IP (Intellectual Property). He even acknowledges his understanding of her perspective on action due to children’s fondness for James Bond, but a similar approach wouldn’t work for the anticipations surrounding a new GoldenEye game.
In 2010, GoldenEye 007 was exclusively released for Wii, featuring Daniel Craig as Bond instead of Pierce Brosnan from the original Nintendo 64 version that came out in 1997. A year later, this first-person shooter was also made available on PS3 and Xbox 360 under the title GoldenEye 007: Reloaded. Recently, the initial GoldenEye game has been made accessible via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and Xbox Game Pass.
IO Interactive, creators of the Hitman series, are currently developing a fresh James Bond game titled “Project 007.” Unlike existing films, this title isn’t adapted from any specific franchise installment, instead focusing on a younger Bond character. The goal is to kick-start a new trilogy with this innovative approach.
