In 2016, Universal and Activision Blizzard released a movie adaptation of World of Warcraft titled Warcraft. The film garnered $47.4 million domestically but managed to make a total of $439.1 million globally. Despite this, Bobby Kotick, the former head of Activision Blizzard, expressed his view that Warcraft was one of the worst movies he’s ever encountered and even mentioned it as a possible factor for Chris Metzen, a long-time World of Warcraft designer at Blizzard, to depart in 2016.
On the Grit podcast, Kotick shared that Metzen experienced burnout during the filming process of Warcraft. Kotick stated that he believed it was a poor decision to create the movie, but the agreement had been made before Activision merged with Blizzard. Furthermore, he mentioned that Warcraft served as a significant diversion for Blizzard, causing the company to shift its focus away from their games.
Kotick reminisced that the production of the movie proved to be a significant drain on resources and a major disruption. He pondered over the many game developers who dedicate their lives to creating video games, only to find themselves involved in tasks like casting and set work – all of which caused quite a diversion. As a result, our expansion packs were delayed, patches weren’t completed on schedule, and it was one of the poorest films I’ve ever witnessed.
Kotick mentioned that he had pleaded with Metzen to rejoin Blizzard, which eventually happened in 2022. Since Metzen’s return, Kotick remarked that they barely communicate, and then rhetorically questioned, “What do I even talk to Chris Metzen about game design?”
As a dedicated fan, I was hoping to see World of Warcraft on Game Pass following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. However, it has been confirmed that this isn’t going to happen. In fact, World of Warcraft is still going strong as it celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024 and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
