The beloved Legacy of Kain series, long missed by fans, resurfaced last year with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered. This collection was released digitally on consoles and PCs in December 2024. However, physical copies for PS5 and Nintendo Switch will soon be available to own, as the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered PS5 and Nintendo Switch physical editions are set to launch on June 13. For only $50, that’s a great deal with the comprehensive package, but if you prefer to just get the game without additional items, opt for the standard PS5 or Nintendo Switch editions at $35 each. The remastered edition of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 offers upgraded versions of the original games, Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, initially released on PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2. In these games, you’ll embark on a vengeful journey with Raziel, a vampire transformed into a wraith, pursuing his creator, Kain, across the magical world of Nosgoth. The remastered versions come with updated graphics (with the ability to switch back to original PS1 and PS2 graphics at any time), gameplay improvements, and in-game galleries loaded with artwork and behind-the-scenes content. The physical copies are exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, but you can also purchase the digital version on various consoles and PCs. For PC gamers, purchasing it from GOG will not only grant access to the game but also offers a discount of $22.49 (previously $30).
As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting resurgence in the Legend of Kain universe! The Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is just one piece of this grand puzzle that also includes a new Soul Reaver prequel graphic novel, an upcoming tabletop RPG, and a lore encyclopedia. Fingers crossed for a fresh single-player installment in the series soon! No matter when it comes, now’s a fantastic time to be a Legend of Kain devotee. And if you’re new to these games, hop on board! Most of them have been re-released on modern platforms, making it easy for everyone to join in the adventure.
The Soul Reaver duology is just a part of the larger Legacy of Kain saga. The series began with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, where we see Kain’s transformation into a vampire, setting the stage for the rest of the storyline. Even the time-traveling plot of Soul Reaver revisits and reinterprets these events. A sequel, Blood Omen 2, was released next, although it’s mostly unrelated to Soul Reaver’s storyline. However, it continues Kain’s character development and adds to the lore of Nosgoth. You can find both games on the PlayStation Store and PC platforms like GOG and Steam.
The story culminates in Legacy of Kain: Defiance, a game that unfolds immediately after the events of Soul Reaver 1 and 2. In this installment, players can control both Raziel and Kain. However, be aware that it concludes with a suspenseful cliffhanger, fueling fans’ anticipation for a new installment in the series. Despite the unresolved ending, it does provide some resolution to the Soul Reaver storyline and is definitely worth playing once you’ve finished the remastered collection. At the moment, Legacy of Kain: Defiance can be found on PC (though you might find a second-hand copy for PS2), but it’s currently on sale at GOG for less than $1 (usually $7).
