Matthew Ninaber serves as the director, writer, producer, and lead actor in the production of “A Knight’s War,” a captivating blend of medieval action, dark fantasy, and horror elements. This creation is not only gritty but also imaginative, featuring a generous sprinkling of black humor to counterbalance its predominantly grim and ominous tone. The story revolves around ancient prophecies, envious deities, heartless demons, bloodthirsty witches, and other sinister elements that contribute to the creation of a twisted and foreboding universe.
As an ’80s kid at heart, “A Knight’s War” stirred up nostalgic vibes of the thrilling fantasy adventures I used to devour during my childhood. For 104 minutes, it evoked memories of classics like “Krull”, “Conan the Barbarian”, “Beastmaster”, and “Dragonslayer”. However, what truly left an impression was how Ninaber and his team managed to create such a grand spectacle with minimal resources. “A Knight’s War” may not have had the backing of a major studio, but it frequently felt like it did. The set design, costumes, makeup, visual effects – all were a breathtaking tribute to the creative passion and skill that fueled its creation.

Together with his brother Jeremy, Ninaber penned this tale that brims with unique mythology, skillfully intertwining descriptive narration and vivid imagery in its construction. The narrative commences with two siblings, Bhodie (portrayed by Jeremy Ninaber) and William (Matthew Ninaber), who are knights embarking on a quest to save a young woman from a sinister ritual involving demons. This woman is none other than Avalon (Kristen Kaster), whom they suspect holds the key to a foreboding mystical prediction.
However, their attempts to save Avalon are unsuccessful as she is whisked away to a horrific realm teeming with wickedness. In a last-ditch effort, Bhodie chases after her by passing through a prohibited portal, while William struggles against a sea of demons. Upon entering this realm, Bhodie encounters an enigmatic guardian (Shane Nicely) who reveals that three malevolent rulers control three magical gems. If Bhodie hopes to get Avalon back home, he must vanquish these lords and recover the stones.
To aid Bhodie in his quest, the guardian presents him with a mystical charm granting him a hundred lives as a loan. His condition is that Bhodie brings him back upon returning to our world. Agreeing, Bhodie embarks on his search for Avalon. Quickly finding it, persuading her to join him proves tricky because she’s engrossed in her personal mission – one driven by her thirst for retribution.

Further on, the story unfolds as Bhodie and Avalon, harboring mutual suspicions, engage in a tense confrontation with malevolent entities, occasionally clashing with each other too. Throughout this journey, Ninaber introduces us to a diverse assortment of eerie adversaries and intense, blood-curdling battle scenes. This thrilling tale unfolds against an appropriately mystical setting. Occasionally, the narrative becomes overly explanatory, and the mythology might be confusing at times. However, the film maintains its pace, offering one masterfully choreographed scene after another.
