During the February 3-9 timeframe, “Ne Zha 2” once again topped the box office in China, maintaining its powerful Lunar New Year stride. This movie, distributed by Enlight Pictures, made approximately RMB1.92 billion ($267.1 million) during this period, pushing its overall earnings to an astounding $1.11 billion, as reported by Artisan Gateway.
During its run, the animated sequel shattered numerous box office records. It claimed the title of the highest-earning film in the nation’s history, comfortably outperforming the previous record set by the 2021 war epic “The Battle at Lake Changjin,” which grossed $802 million, and leaving behind other previous top earners such as “Wolf Warriors 2” (released in 2017, with earnings of $791 million) and the 2021 release “Hi, Mom” (which earned $752 million).
In North America, “Ne Zha 2” surpassed the $936.7 million earnings of “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens,” becoming the highest-grossing film in a single market ever recorded.
Coming in second position, the movie “Detective Chinatown 1900” by As One Production earned an additional $38.1 million, bringing its total earnings to a whopping $388.6 million. The latest edition of this popular comedy-mystery series continues to impress audiences and perform exceptionally well.
In the latest installment of Fantawild Animation’s kid-friendly series “Boonie Bears: Future Reborn,” which brought in a box office total of $9.8 million, making it the third highest grossing film, and contributing to a grand total of $88.1 million.
In the sequel of Beijing Culture’s historical fantasy series titled “The Creation of the Gods 2”, it ranked fourth at the box office, gathering a revenue of approximately $7.8 million. This adds up to a grand total of $153.2 million earned so far.
Completing the top five earners, the naval action thriller from Bona Film Group, titled “Operation Hadal,” grossed an additional $4.5 million, raising its overall earnings to a stunning $48.6 million.
Over the weekend, the box office earnings added up to $330 million, and China’s total accumulated since 2025 has jumped to $2.14 billion – a significant rise of 418.9% compared to the same period in 2024. This impressive growth clearly demonstrates the robustness of this year’s Lunar New Year movie lineup, as big-budget films have been highly successful in luring audiences back to theaters.
As “Ne Zha 2” exceeds the $1 billion milestone and maintains strong audience appeal for ongoing releases, China’s cinema market is steadily thriving throughout February.
