Over the past 20 days, President Donald Trump has been busy implementing a flurry of actions aimed at reducing government expenses and shrinking the federal workforce. He indicated during a recent interview before the Super Bowl that this aggressive campaign will not be slowing down any time soon on Fox News.
During an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier on the eve of Super Bowl LIX, Trump revealed his intention to assign Elon Musk’s team from the Department of Government Efficiency to both the U.S. Military and the Department of Education, which he suggested could happen within the next 24 hours.
When queried about his faith in Musk and his endeavor to dissolve the U.S. Agency for International Development, Trump replied, “I trust Elon? He’s not playing any tricks here. I’m curious how he manages his time with [DOGE]. He seems so engaged. I’ll be speaking with him in about 24 hours, possibly, to suggest he inspect the Department of Education. He’ll discover the same issues as USAID there. Then I plan to visit the military. Let’s examine the military next. We’ll uncover hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and misuse.
Trump reinforced his earlier pledges to dismantle the Department of Education, following reports that he plans to issue an executive order for its elimination, a role it has played since 1979 as established by Congress. In addition, Trump has set defense spending in his sights more recently. The 47th president hinted at cutting costs at “the Pentagon,” which is the military, during a Friday press conference, as reported by the New York Times.
Despite Trump’s claims about DOGE’s extensive impact, not every effort to boost its influence has been fruitful. Over the weekend, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer prevented DOGE from using the Treasury Department’s payment system, fearing possible damage or harm, as reported by CNN.
Trump expressed strong disagreement and called the Treasury ruling “absolutely ridiculous.” He emphasized the need for immediate action to address the inefficiencies within the system, as well as combat fraud, waste, and corruption in government.
Baier questioned Trump about discoveries made by DOGE’s investigations into organizations like USAID. Trump replied, “We’re discussing hundreds of millions of dollars being sent to places they shouldn’t be. If I were to read you a list of the locations, you might think it sounds absurd. You’ve seen similar lists yourself, and there are many more you haven’t even heard about yet. It’s shocking. It’s a major fraud.
