Marion Cotillard admits responsibility for the unsmooth execution of her character’s death scene towards the end of Christopher Nolan’s last Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.
Cotillard admitted in a conversation with Les rencontres du Papotin that he didn’t deliver the scene to his satisfaction. He struggled to find the appropriate stance and approach for the role. He confessed he was under pressure, and it resulted in a mistake. In simpler terms, he messed up.
At the climax of “The Dark Knight Rises”, Marion Cotillard’s character Talia al Ghul, the villainous offspring of Ra’s al Ghul from “Batman Begins”, is pursued throughout Gotham and ultimately meets her end at the hands of the Caped Crusader. In her dying words, she utters, “My father’s work is complete.” Some fans have argued that Cotillard’s acting in this critical moment appears stiff, which they believe detracts from an otherwise emotional scene finale.
Previously, Cotillard spoke about the controversial scene during an interview with Allociné in 2016. She expressed, “At times, things don’t work out as planned and you wonder, ‘Why was that take kept?’ But it’s either we blame everyone or nobody. I felt people were overly reactive because it was hard to be recognized solely for this scene. When I strive to bring authenticity to every character I portray, it’s challenging to be remembered just for one scene.
Despite some people raising concerns about Marion Cotillard’s scene, this didn’t prevent “The Dark Knight Rises” from turning into a massive box office success in 2012. The movie eventually earned more than $1 billion globally, outdoing its production budget of $250 million.
