Hiroyuki Sanada Says ‘Shogun’ Season 2 Is ‘Aiming’ to Shoot This Fall: ‘The Writers’ Room Is Working So Hard’

Actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who played a role in “Shogun”, mentioned that production for the second season of the Emmy-awarded FX show might start as soon as this autumn.

Sanada shared with EbMaster over the weekend at AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards in Los Angeles that they are targeting a fall release this year. The writers’ room is currently putting in a tremendous effort. For the upcoming season, half of the Season 1 cast will remain, and the other half will be replaced with new faces. They are diligently searching for an exceptional crew to work on next season, so Sanada expressed his anticipation.

Although FX hasn’t officially given the go-ahead for Season 2 of ‘Shogun’, those involved in the production, both on and off screen, have hinted at what we can expect from this historical drama. Back in January, creator and executive producer Rachel Kondo confirmed that development is still happening, but she didn’t reveal much more.

She expressed that we’re persisting in our efforts, we haven’t thrown in the towel yet, and I’m unsure what more we can share at this point,” she stated. Meanwhile, Justin Marks – Kondo’s husband, co-creator, and executive producer of “Shogun” – mentioned that they are approximately six weeks away from wrapping up the writers room.

In October, Mark struck a comprehensive television agreement with FX, under which he’ll create fresh programs for their channel. This potentially involves more installments of “Shogun” alongside Kondo, which could be jointly produced with the Clavell estate.

This year at the Golden Globes, “Shogun” earned four awards, including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Sanada. The program also garnered an impressive 18 awards at the 2024 Emmys, making it the most award-winning single season of any television series.
