It appears that the old movie “Dog Man” continues to outperform newer films, as it will top the domestic box office for a second consecutive weekend. On the other hand, the horror film “Heart Eyes” and the action movie starring Ke Huy Quan called “Love Hurts” are coming in second and third, respectively, with less impressive opening weekends.
Despite a significant decline projected in its second week, Universal’s “Dog Man” is anticipated to outperform other films. After opening with more than expected earnings of $36 million, the crime comedy brought in $3.2 million on its second Friday. This suggests a potential drop of 62% over the three-day period. Traditionally, Super Bowl weekend isn’t a busy time for moviegoing; even popular family-friendly films like “Dog Man” can be affected by the year’s biggest television event. By the first 10 days, total domestic gross is expected to surpass $54 million, and with a production budget of only $40 million, the film remains in a strong position.
On its opening weekend, Sony’s distribution of “Heart Eyes,” a production by Spyglass Media Group, grossed approximately $3.7 million from 3,102 theaters. Anticipated earnings for this three-day period are around $8.5 million. This horror/rom-com hybrid was made with an estimated budget of $18 million and aims to captivate audiences during the Valentine’s Day weekend to achieve box office success. Despite favorable reviews, Cinema Score gave the movie a B- grade, although horror films typically receive lower grades compared to other genres. “Heart Eyes” was entirely financed and produced by Spyglass. Directed by Josh Ruben, the R-rated slasher features Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding as two singles who are mistaken for a couple by a masked killer.
In the meantime, “Love Hurts” by Universal fetched a bronze medal, generating $2.6 million over its opening day and previews from 3,055 theaters. This action flick is predicted to have a relatively small opening of $6.0 million. Similar to “Heart Eyes,” “Love Hurts” was made on a budget of $18 million, but it’s off to a slower start and will need to surmount unfavorable reviews and a mediocre C+ rating from Cinema Score to make money at the box office. This R-rated film is the directorial debut of stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio and features recent Oscar winners Quan and Ariana DeBose as hitmen with a romantic history.
In a recent box office update, Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” has moved down to the fourth position after earning approximately $1 million on Friday. As it approaches its second month in theaters, this computer-generated musical prequel continues to maintain a strong presence atop domestic box office charts, suggesting a firm market grip and minimal competition since the New Year. With another small decrease (around 27%), “Mufasa” is projected to reach a total domestic gross of $235 million by the end of this weekend. This weekend’s earnings will see it surpass its holiday season competitor, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” making it the ninth highest-grossing North American release of 2024.
Closing out the top five positions, the Warner Bros. and New Line production titled “Companion” is experiencing a significant drop in earnings, despite favorable reviews and a Cinema Score grade of B+. The horror-satire is projected to make approximately $3.6 million over its second weekend, based on predictions by some competitors. This would bring its total domestic earnings for the past ten days up to an estimated $16 million, starting with a Friday take of around $1 million.
