Japanese Overwatch pros’ meme comp is so good other teams are running it

A less anticipated Overwatch esports squad, initially hailing from a daring Japanese team, has emerged as a dominant force.

In most cases, Meta in Overwatch remains inflexible without significant variations, yet an inventive team composition from a Japanese Overwatch squad during the Overwatch Championship Series (OWCS) appears to have gained traction and sparked creativity among other teams.

In their early Overwatch Contenders Series matches, the team known as Please Not Hero Ban (PNHB) stood out by using unusual team compositions with Symmetra, Torbjorn, and Wrecking Ball. Surprisingly, they’ve excelled with these characters in their games. Other teams haven’t copied PNHB’s exact lineups, but some heroes have seen increased play due to this trend.

Is off-meta the new meta?

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that Symmetra and Torbjorn aren’t typically stars in the Overwatch esports scene. Yet, PNHB has been consistently fielding a DPS duo of Symmetra and Torbjorn in almost every game, which seems to have sparked a trend among other teams. Usually, I see Wrecking Ball paired with Illari as the support, with a flexible pick rounding out their lineup. It looks like Korean teams have been drawing inspiration from this setup, as they’ve been experimenting with similar formations during recent matches in the Overwatch Contenders Series.

As a devoted esports enthusiast, I found myself marveling at the innovative approach taken by the Korean team Crazy Raccoon during their skirmish with T1. They opted for a modified version of the Hazard composition, frequently selecting Symmetra, Torbjorn, and Wrecking Ball to complement it.

Torbjorn stands out as one of the most durable DPS characters due to his Overload skill. On the other hand, Symmetra’s teleportation ability can sneak behind enemy lines and disrupt them with her teleporter. With Wrecking Ball being independent and backed by a self-protective duo consisting of Lucio and Juno, this team composition turns out to be an unexpectedly strong counter for Hazard.

From a fan’s perspective, it’s plausible that teams appreciate the unique qualities of characters like Symmetra and Torbjorn, regardless of any potential match-ups against players like Hazard. Teams such as New Era and Vec consistently chose to team up these DPS characters with a variety of tanks, including Reinhardt and Sigma, during each of their matches.

Over time, characters like Sojourn have been gradually weakened while Torbjorn and Symmetra have received enhancements across multiple game updates. This suggests that many teams consider these two heroes to be particularly powerful choices. Torbjorn’s durability as a DPS character is extraordinary, and Symmetra’s teleportation ability works best in a well-coordinated team setup.

Moving forward with the ongoing storyline, it’s intriguing to observe whether these previously overlooked characters will maintain their prominence in subsequent events. With Hazard still leading the way, it seems likely that this trio of undervalued characters will stay in the limelight.
