Despite only being available for just under three months, the Pokemon TCG Pocket game has already raked in an astonishing half a billion dollars, leaving players utterly astounded.
Ever since it was unveiled, there’s been a global buzz about the release of the Pokemon TCG Pocket app. In just two days, it managed to amass 10 million downloads, while its first-week tally reached an impressive 30 million.
Despite the fact that Pokemon merchandise is consistently popular, it came as a shock to many that its trading card game was able to rake in around half a billion dollars – nearly equivalent to the massive success of Pokemon Go – within just three short months, given that such games usually resonate with smaller audiences.
A half-billion-dollar game with poor content
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that I was both astounded and taken aback by the impact Pokemon TCG Pocket had, given its relatively minimal content.
A Redditor using the handle PTCGP expressed astonishment at the situation, considering that the developers responsible for the game failed to create a functioning trading system effectively.

Users quickly expressed strong dislike towards the mechanic, venting on social media about their dissatisfaction. This public outcry ultimately prompted The Pokemon Company to issue a statement, promising immediate improvements to the system.
Players found it expected, with one stating, “Not designing it for easy trading is part of their strategy to keep things challenging,” and another noting, “Predatory systems operate the way they do because that’s how they were intended to function; it’s not a mistake or an oversight, but a deliberate choice in design.
But it’s not just the faulty Trading System causing issues; the repeated occurrences that don’t offer substantial prizes are wearing down the users, too.
The user expressed frustration, suggesting that making their game more trader-friendly isn’t a major concern given their earnings. Instead, they pointed out several other issues such as lack of new event types, poor rewards, and minimal New Year’s gifts despite receiving a quarter of a billion. They also mentioned the company’s focus on adjusting Wonder Pick rather than enhancing the game quality or user interface.
Ever since it debuted, the Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCG) Pocket Edition has unveiled three sets of expansions and merely two primary categories of events: Drop events boasting Promo cards and Emblem Events. This limited variety means that players find themselves with few options once these events have concluded.
While the current approach, which involves minimal additional effort from players using existing assets, seems successful for DeNA and The Pokemon Company, they should also acknowledge the significant contributions made by their user base, especially considering the substantial revenue they generate.
Although there are currently active Emblem and Promo Card events, as well as an upcoming Wonder Pick event, it remains to be seen if Pokemon TCG Pocket has anything new up its sleeve that could bring a burst of freshness into the game.
