As a gamer myself, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! After a challenging year, Rocksteady Studios, the masterminds behind the incredible Batman: Arkham series, are diving back into the world of single-player Batman games. This announcement comes from Warner Bros.’ gaming division, following the setbacks they faced with their live-service title, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Unfortunately, the game didn’t quite hit the mark when it was released in early 2024. The final update for Suicide Squad rolled out last month, marking the end of its support, less than a year after its launch.
Rocksteady is reportedly returning to its successful origins and working on a single-player Batman game
As a hardcore gamer, I’ve always been in awe of Rocksteady Studios, known for crafting an iconic Batman trilogy that began with Arkham Asylum in 2009. This series has left a lasting impression on both fans and critics alike. Fast forward to around 2017, Warner Bros., along with Rocksteady, decided to hop on the live-service game bandwagon. Given the potential for continuous income if executed properly, it seemed like a logical move from an executive perspective.
However, considering their background in creating single-player action-adventure games, it’s not so surprising that their take on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League didn’t quite hit the mark. Reports suggest that this venture has cost Warner Bros. a hefty $200 million.
Fortunately, it appears the most challenging circumstances are now behind us regarding Rocksteady. Regrettably, layoffs were a recent reality for them, but at least they’re back to their recognized work. However, Warner Bros. has cautioned that the anticipated Batman game is yet years from release, so don’t anticipate updates anytime soon.
Towards the end of last year, the virtual reality version of Batman: Arkham Shadow was introduced. This game was met with favorable reviews from critics and even won the Game Award for the Best VR Game. The storyline in Shadows unfolds two years after the events portrayed in Batman: Arkham Origins, a different Arkham game not created by Rocksteady. Shadows was developed by Camouflaj, who also produced Marvel’s Iron Man VR, while Origins was developed by WB Games Montreal, known for Gotham Knights.
It’s worth mentioning that over time, there seems to be uncertainty about how many original Rocksteady team members are still with the company. Co-founders Jamie Walker and Sefton Hill departed in 2022 to establish a new studio, allegedly taking some Rocksteady employees along. Add to this recent downsizings, and the fact that the latest successful “Arkham” game wasn’t developed by Rocksteady, which leads one to wonder if they are prepared for another project of this kind.
Due to limited details available on the upcoming Batman game, it’s expected that we might not get a clear picture of its appearance for quite some time, possibly years. While we can certainly wish for the best, patience is key as we eagerly await more updates.
