Nosferatu Devours Box Office: You Won’t Believe the Numbers

2025 saw a strong start for the U.K. and Ireland’s box office in January, raking in approximately £94.1 million ($116.6 million), which is a 10% jump compared to January 2024’s earnings of £85.2 million ($105.6 million) and a 12% escalation from January 2023, as reported by Comscore.

In this month, Robert Eggers’ remake of “Nosferatu” topped the box office with a chilling revenue of $15.6 million, securing its position as the sixth-highest-grossing horror film in the region. This revamped vampire tale surpassed “A Quiet Place’s” earnings ($15.1 million) and is now approaching “The Final Destination’s” total ($15.9 million).

In January, Disney solidified its market leadership by holding a 30.8% share, with the second and third positions also going to Disney titles. The animated film “Mufasa: The Lion King” made a strong showing in second place, earning approximately $15 million for the month, which boosted its total earnings to an impressive $36.7 million. Notably, this surpasses the lifetime gross of “The Little Mermaid,” which now stands at $34 million.

This surpasses the lifetime earnings of the original Sonic movie ($23.9 million), and it’s currently trailing ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’ by about 10%, which made $33.5 million.

The popular musical “Wicked” continues to charm audiences, earning an extra $6.1 million in January alone, bringing its total earnings to a staggering $75.3 million. Jon M. Chu’s adaptation has outperformed all other releases of 2024 so far, and is now the 27th highest-grossing film ever in the region, surpassing “Oppenheimer” with its $74 million earnings and aiming to overtake “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’s” $75.6 million.

In the box office race, Disney’s “Moana 2” earned $6 million, pushing its overall earnings to a impressive $51.3 million.

Halina Reijn’s film “Babygirl” debuted at number 8, earning $5.1 million, surpassing the earnings of recent R-rated films such as “Terrifier 3” ($4.1 million) and “The Substance” ($4.7 million). However, it fell short of “Smile 2” ($8.1 million) and “Poor Things” ($9.4 million). The Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man” came in ninth place with $4.7 million for the month of January, bringing its total to $8.3 million, while Jesse Eisenberg’s movie “A Real Pain” closed out the top 10 with a take of $3.6 million.

The first week of February begins with the IMAX premiere of “Becoming Led Zeppelin” and historical drama “September 5”. This will be followed by DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” and action-comedy “Love Hurts”. In the middle of the month, we have major releases such as “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy”, Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World”, and the Valentine’s Day horror flick “Heart Eyes”. As February comes to a close, we can look forward to the horror movie “The Monkey”, the anime finale “Attack On Titan: The Last Attack”, and Gia Coppola’s film starring Pamela Anderson, “The Last Showgirl”.
