Hank Azaria Fears AI Can Replace ‘Simpsons’ Voice Roles and ‘Recreate 100 Voices I Created’: ‘It’s Just Wrong to Steal My Likeness or Sound’

Hank Azaria voiced concerns to The New York Times that AI might take over his roles as various characters on “The Simpsons,” where he’s been a voice actor since 1989. Known for lending his voice to many characters on the long-running Fox animated series, such as Moe the bartender and Chief Wiggum, Azaria acknowledges that AI has a vast amount of material to work with, given his 36 years of voice acting on “The Simpsons.

In the near future, I anticipate that artificial intelligence may be capable of reproducing the voices of the over 100 characters I’ve voiced on ‘The Simpsons’, which span nearly four decades. This thought brings a sense of sadness, and it also feels unfair to use my likeness or voice – or anyone else’s – without permission.

For my specific situation, AI could potentially tap into 36 years worth of the character Moe, the consistently grumpy bartender, who has been featured in almost every episode of ‘The Simpsons’. He’s experienced fear, love, physical pain, and more frequently, deep-seated anger. I’ve found myself laughing at Moe in various ways over the years, and I might have sighed at him as many as 100 times. In terms of AI training, that’s a substantial amount of data.

Though AI may successfully mimic Azaria’s voice, the actor remains optimistic that it won’t be able to replicate his physical presence and essence. He expresses hope that there will always be something lacking in AI, something that embodies our unique human qualities or “humanness.

A significant part of me is reflected in the voices I create,” Azaria penned. “Can a machine capture all that? What will it sound like without human essence? How noticeable will the change be? Frankly, I’m not sure, but I believe for now, we’ll be able to tell something isn’t quite right, just as we can with poor quality movies or TV shows.

He summed up his thoughts as follows: “It seems more like an illusion than reality, so there’s no need to focus on it.” Believability, he emphasized, is achieved through skillful execution, including compelling storytelling, convincing performances, excellent camerawork, competent direction, a well-written script, and fitting music.

Right now, ‘The Simpsons’ is airing its 36th season on Fox, and you can catch the latest episodes on Disney+ as well. Interestingly, aside from his role in this show, Hank Azaria has also lent his voice to other animated series such as ‘Family Guy’, ‘Futurama’, and ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’.
