‘Magic: The Gathering’ Movie and TV Universe Underway From Legendary, Hasbro

Since 1993, “Magic: The Gathering,” a globally popular trading card game often enjoyed in basements, is now slated for significant movie and television adaptations by Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment.

The toy manufacturer known for “Godzilla” and “Dune” franchises, along with a mini-major studio in Hollywood, are collaborating to develop a “live-action feature film and TV series universe” based on a popular fantasy series. They’re planning to start with a movie initially. Hasbro values the strategy game they’re using as a foundation for this project at around $1 billion, due to over 50 million people interacting with its enchanting worlds.

Mary Parent, head of worldwide production at Legendary, expressed that they are known for carefully nurturing unique, cherished intellectual properties. Among these, none fits the bill better than ‘Magic The Gathering.’ Collaborating with the exceptional Hasbro team, we eagerly anticipate crafting a multimedia realm that delights long-term fans and attracts a vast horde of new ones,” said Mary Parent.

Zev Foreman, the head of films at Hasbro, mentioned that the proposed content schedule represented a “thrilling and fitting collaboration,” merging one of the world’s most recognizable brands with a strong and reliable caretaker.

Known for its impressive past achievements in this field, the company has consistently delivered results. For instance, it’s involved with the popular “monsterverse” of Godzilla and King Kong, but also ventured into projects like “Detective Pikachu” based on Pokémon, movies linked to Minecraft, and the “Enola Holmes” series. Future plans include a highly anticipated adaptation of the classic video game “Street Fighter” and an innovative blend of live action and animation titled “Animal Friends,” starring Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, and Dan Levy.

At Hasbro, development projects encompass Sony TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television’s adaptations of the timeless board game “Clue”; a movie derived from Monopoly produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, and an animated “Magic: The Gathering” series that is currently in production at Netflix.
