Star Cinema from ABS-CBN is taking a chance with romantic comedy once more, planning to debut “My Love Will Make You Disappear” in cinemas on March 28th throughout the U.S. and Canada. This is the first joint appearance on the big screen for Filipino actors Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino, whose combined online fan base surpasses 40 million.
In the rom-com by Chad Vidanes, Patrick Valencia, and Isabella Policarpio, we follow the story of Sari (Chiu), a woman who believes herself to be cursed due to every man she falls for mysteriously disappearing. This narrative intertwines with that of Jolo (Avelino), a troubled landlord struggling with an apartment complex on the verge of collapse. As they both strive to protect their community from eviction, Sari’s supposed curse poses a challenge to their blossoming relationship.
In their first collaboration, Chiu and Avelino are joining forces for a new feature film. Chiu, known for her popularity at the box office with movies like “Bride for Rent” and “The Ghost Bride,” brings her acting skills to this project. On the other hand, Avelino, who has received accolades for his dramatic performances in “Heneral Luna” and “Fan Girl,” is also lending his talent to this production. They previously worked together on TV shows such as “Linlang” and “What Happened to Secretary Kim.
The team responsible for delivering the hit album “Hello, Love, Again” is active once more, this time led by Amorette Jones from AJMC in marketing efforts, accompanied by distribution experts Evan Saxon and Joe Garel. Their marketing strategy aims to exploit the popularity of the stars while attracting a wider audience among Asian-Americans and Hispanics. AJMC’s campaign will focus on social media interaction and strategic collaborations with Filipino-American businesses, all while leveraging ABS-CBN Global’s worldwide platform.
The approach we’re taking is modeled on the successful plan that turned “Hello, Love, Again” into the highest-earning Filipino film in North America. As Saxon and Garel pointed out, our performance per screen exceeded even the biggest blockbusters from major Hollywood studios, underscoring the increasing demand for Filipino content worldwide.
ABS-CBN Films chief Kriz Gazmen notes that Filipino films are increasingly being acknowledged globally, and the movie ‘My Love Will Make You Disappear’ underscores the influence of kilig as a unique aspect of the Philippines’ cultural offerings in entertainment. Kilig refers to the special sensation of romantic excitement that is characteristic of the country’s film industry.
For Star Cinema, founded in 1993 and responsible for over 200 films, this latest release signifies another advance in increasing the global influence of Filipino cinema. The studio remains focused on catering to Filipino audiences globally, while simultaneously fostering connections to wider markets through relatable themes and the appeal of its stars.
