Recently, on “The Late Show,” actor Will Ferrell playfully criticized the Oscars for overlooking “Will & Harper” in the Best Documentary category. The film, distributed by Netflix following a successful debut at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, revolves around a road trip that Ferrell embarked on with Harper Steele after she revealed her transgender identity 30 years into their friendship. Although “Will & Harper” was among the 15 documentaries shortlisted for the Oscars, it didn’t secure one of the nominee spots.
Ferrell admitted on ‘The Late Show’ that we didn’t win, and Colbert retorted passionately, ‘I can’t stand the Academy!’)
Well, let me tell you, the doc branch isn’t exactly my crowd,” I joked. “I wouldn’t recommend spending time with them if I were you. They seem like quite an unimpressive bunch. If by any chance there are some of them here tonight, well, they can take that!
I was privileged to hear Ferrell share at Sundance before the “Will & Harper” premiere that Steele bravely announced her transition as a transgender woman in an email to a select group of friends. Overwhelmed by her courage, we all conveyed our unwavering support and showered her with love. This moment sparked questions among us: How might we assist you? What actions can we take to stand by your side?
Ferrell said he had “zero knowledge” about the trans community before Harper came out to him.
Ferrell shared that while he’d encountered trans individuals before, he didn’t have any personally close to him. This made the subject matter fresh and intriguing for him, which is why he feels this movie is particularly noteworthy. It offers an opportunity for those of us who identify as cisgender to inquire about these topics and, more importantly, to lend a supportive ear to discuss their experiences.
During a global media journey for “Will & Harper,” Ferrell expressed his thoughts last autumn to The Independent. He explained that he believes transphobia stems from the human tendency to be apprehensive about things we aren’t familiar with, stating, “I think it’s fear of the unknown.
In an interview with The Independent, Ferrell expressed that there exists a significant amount of hostility towards trans individuals. He emphasized that this can be extremely hazardous for them in certain contexts. However, he remains puzzled as to why trans people pose a threat to him as a cisgender man, and equally perplexed about what makes Harper threatening to him.
It’s peculiar for him, as Harper has now become… herself. She’s found her true identity at last. Regardless of whether you can fully comprehend this transformation, why worry if someone is content? Why does their happiness make you feel threatened? If the transgender community causes unease, I believe it arises from a lack of self-assurance or insecurity.”
“It’s odd to him that Harper has finally become… herself. She’s discovered her authentic self at last. No matter if you can fully grasp this change, why concern yourself with someone’s joy? Why does their happiness seem threatening to you? If the transgender community troubles you, I think it stems from a lack of self-confidence or feeling unsafe within oneself.
“Will & Harper” is now available to stream on Netflix.
