A Chinese zoo has been met with criticism following their unusual practice of painting Chow Chow dogs to resemble tigers. Notably, this is not the first instance where the zoo has attracted controversy for deceiving its guests.
In a turn of events I found quite distressing as an animal enthusiast, the beloved Qinhu Bay Forest Animal Kingdom in Taizhou, China, has been under fire due to images circulating online showing their attempt at depicting dogs as tigers. This creative endeavor, unfortunately, didn’t sit well with many people.
“That’s just inhumane! Absolutely disgusting!” exclaimed an outraged viewer on Instagram.
“This is not ok,” another simply stated.
1) At the zoo, they had some Chow Chows – a medium-sized breed originating from China’s north. Interestingly, these dogs seemed to be painted with orange and black stripes all over, including on their faces and tails. The pictures that went viral showed these striking Chow Chows freely wandering around in their enclosure.
Many found the hoax shocking, but others weren’t taken aback, viewing it as just another example of “unconventional tactics” that are not uncommon in China.
Others playfully compared the situation to the manner in which Temu’s website enhances the attractiveness of its products beyond reality, humorously referring to the dogs as “Temu tiger counterparts.
Qinhu Bay Forest Animal Kingdom zoo claims stunt was “a gimmick”
Following contact from local media, they admitted that they had depicted the dogs as a “tigon” (a hybrid of a male lion and female tiger), not an actual tiger.
The Qinhu Bay Forest Animal Kingdom clarified that the prank was merely a playful trick. Additionally, they emphasized that the Chow Chows’ fur was dyed by professionals in a way that didn’t harm their health.
On previous occasions, the Qinhu Bay Forest Animal Kingdom has given a zoo-like appearance to dogs by dyeing their fur, such as in May 2024 when they transformed Chow Chows into panda-lookalikes using dye.
Many visitors are arriving at our facility, so please stand in line. Unfortunately, there are no panda bears currently at the zoo, but we decided to share this information due to your interest,” said the zoo representative.
Come September 2024, another Chinese zoo, specifically the Shanwei Zoo, decided to color the coats of their Chow Chows to resemble pandas too.

Following the widespread sharing of images depicting dogs resembling pandas, the zoo clarified that the creature was indeed not a traditional panda but rather a “panda-dog.
Ultimately, the Shanwei Zoo admitted to the trickery, prompting numerous visitors to demand refunds of their admission fees.
In China, it’s not against the law to dye a dog’s fur, but repeated incidents of this practice within the zoo community might decrease public interest due to growing protests from concerned citizens who are urging for the closure of such establishments.
