It appears that YouTube’s efforts to combat ad blockers have been successful, with the platform reportedly generating more than $36 billion in advertising revenue last year on its own.
YouTube stands out as one of the internet’s leading video-hosting sites, with more than 2.5 billion people worldwide using it every month by January 2025.
2024 marked a significant shift in the platform’s approach to advertising. I found myself personally affected by their new strategy aimed at curbing the use of ad blockers. This change was designed to ensure that viewers, like myself, couldn’t bypass videos meant for Premium members without due payment.
In response to user complaints following its trial run towards the end of 2023, YouTube took aggressive action against ad blockers. This was done by embedding ads within videos themselves and also displaying ads during pauses on Smart TVs.

In October 2024, it appeared as though YouTube was deliberately concealing the ‘skip ad’ button and the duration of ads on their mobile application, which some users found to be a forceful strategy aimed at discouraging viewers from avoiding lengthy advertisements.
YouTube rakes in billions from ad revenue alone
The alterations made to this platform proved worthwhile, since it’s said to have generated an astounding $36 billion in advertising income throughout all of 2024.
According to StreamTV Insider’s findings, the platform set an unprecedented revenue milestone in Q4 of 2024, generating a staggering $10.473 billion – marking the first time they exceeded the $10 billion threshold in a single quarter.
Additionally, this figure does not account for revenue generated through Premium and YouTube TV subscriptions, as they have amassed more than 9 million subscribers by the time of release.

By fall of 2024, Alphabet Inc., its parent company, announced a significant milestone: a $50 billion income generated from YouTube’s advertisement-friendly and subscription offerings over the past year, marking yet another major achievement for their operations.
In December 2024, YouTube introduced a new feature called ‘Play Something’ button to cater to users who are feeling uninterested with their suggested feeds. This feature is designed to assist bored users by suggesting videos they might find appealing when nothing seems interesting in their usual recommendations.
