Tourists in a Cambodian park are being attacked by monkeys, and some believe that YouTubers may have provoked these aggressive encounters by encouraging the animals’ behavior.
The ancient city of Angkor, located in Cambodia, showcases parts of the former capital of the Khmer Empire and is nestled within lush forests teeming with around 3,000 mischievous macaque monkeys.
One of Cambodia’s biggest tourist hotspots is frequently visited by YouTube personalities and content producers, who travel there to capture footage for their online channels. Regrettably, some individuals have been accused of mistreating the local monkey population. (SCMP reports this as regular occurrence)
On the other hand, the article indicates that the monkeys’ behavior has been altered due to continuous human interaction and encouragement from YouTubers. This change has resulted in their transformation from wild creatures into more aggressive ones, prone to stealing food and causing harm.
Officials warn against “aggressive” monkeys
Besides monkeys displaying aggression, authorities express concern that this novel behavior could result in lasting harm to the historic tourist site.
Long Kosal, the representative of the site, stated that aside from attacking visitors, they’ve also been seen ascending and knocking down stones, thereby causing damage to the temples.
Additionally, SCMP reports that in the year 2024, the regional agriculture department disclosed a strategy aimed at locating every monkey within the vicinity, with those deemed dangerous to humans being transferred to different locations.
In recent times, numerous instances of monkeys and influencers have gained significant attention on social media platforms due to their virality.
In the year 2024, during a live stream on YouTube, internet star IShowSpeed found himself in the tropical locale of Bali, Indonesia. While there, he and his crew paid a visit to a lush nature reserve teeming with mischievous monkeys.
He quickly took a seat on a park bench where he was warmly welcomed by some monkeys, however, their friendship was short-lived as one of them lost its balance and tumbled from his shoulder, causing his wireless microphone to fall off.
In a flash, another monkey snatched the microphone and made off with it. After a while, Speed found himself tirelessly chasing it around in an attempt to recover the device. Eventually, he concluded that the pursuit was futile.
In other tidbits about monkeys, it was back in November 2024 when approximately 40 macaque monkeys managed to break free from a research center in South Carolina. However, the majority of them were swiftly found.
